Meet the Team

In The Family, UFI, UN, Uncategorized on March 4, 2010 at 11:02 am

From left to right. Front row: Brenda Sanders, President of United Families Arizona; Heather Sanders, journalist extraordinaire; Joshua James, intern at UFI; Shellie Baird, also an intern at UFI. Back row; Marcia Barlow, UN expert; Michael Duff, President of United Families International.

Take a good look at us. We may not be the best looking crew (I’m speaking for myself), but we’re your last hope. Ok, that might be a little extreme–but if you were here–you’d know why I say that (there aren’t too many here on our side). You might want to also take note that we’re all wearing our priceless badges that we fought so hard for.

This is the team in the basement of the UN building, the place Marcia lovingly calls “the cave.” The pro-family coalition has made this their favorite gathering place. In the picture we’re sitting on the ’strategy couch’ (I made that one up, call me Mr. Witty) where most of the dramatic, decisive decisions (yes, decisive decisions) are made.

Remember to check us out on our blog 100% dedicated to our UN visit.

In less than two months, United Families International and many of our international colleagues will gather to form pro-family strategy during the World Congress of Families V (WCF V) in Amsterdam, Holland in the Netherlands – August 10-12.

The World Congress of Families (WCF) was founded in 1997 by Dr. Allan C. Carlson There have been four Congresses to date – WCF I (Prague, 1997), WCF II (Geneva, 1999), WCF III (Mexico City, 2004) and WCF IV (Warsaw, 2007).

The theme of this year’s Congress is “Modern Families – Traditional Values.” No doubt the theme reflects the current and mostly heated debate on marriage and family that is occurring in state legislatures and courts in America, and around the world. World Congress of Families has set the tone this year to address this most important discussion that will address what the family will look like today and tomorrow.

“Marriage, the cornerstone of healthy family life, brings security, contentment, meaning, joy and spiritual maturity
to the man and woman who enter this lifelong covenant with unselfish commitment.”
Excerpt from The Mexico City Declaration

Carol Soelberg, acting president of UFI will have an opportunity to participate in a panel discussion on Education and the Family . We will come away from WCF V with new strategies, energy and commitment to secure a future for the family that will allow us to keep you in the forefront of the issues.

Along with the focus and direction we gain from the Congress, we need financial support to maintain our place in the public square of family policy debate. We have made solid contributions around the globe and we will continue to do so — as long as we have the funding to do so.

Will you please help us with a donation of $25, $50, $100, $250, $500, or EVEN $1000 Today? Or, if you decide to attend WCF V, use www.travelUFI.com to make your travel arrangements, and a donation from PYC Ventures, LLC will be given directly to United Families International. Click HERE for more information.

Any contribution we receive from you will enable us to do the following:

  • Fight to keep the federal Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) in place – as any change or repeal would severely undermine the efforts to preserve man/woman marriage.
  • Promote marriage initiatives at the state level through our state chapter efforts.
  • Demonstrate why marriage between one man and one woman serves the greatest benefits for society: A loving and compassionate society never creates motherless and fatherless families, but it does come to their aid.
  • Raise awareness about the adverse impact that same-sex “marriage” has where it is legal including the fact that marriage between heterosexuals is in decline, religious liberty is in jeopardy and parental rights are at risk.
  • Demonstrate the suffering that abortion causes families: Post-abortive women run risks for numerous physical and psychological complications. . For additional information, see the UFI publication, “Guide to Family Issues: Abortion.”
  • Continue to produce and update our “United Nations Negotiating Guide“. This Guide is viewed as the “Bible” of pro-family language in negotiating United Nations documents.

Consider being part of the family movement by joining us at the World Congress of Families as we work with like-minded organizations, including the Family Research Council; the Howard Center for Family, Religion & Society; American Family Association; Heritage Foundation; Real Women of Canada; Human Life International; and others.

This will prove to be an opportunity of a lifetime.

The latest information on WCF V is at www.worldcongress.org and www.worldcongress.nl (site in English and Dutch). Or go to our website and read more about the World Congress of Families IV, taking place August 10-12.

We will be there to speak for the family, along with thousands of pro-family activists from dozens of nations who are concerned about the militant, anti-family ethos prevalent in the post-modern West.

Together, with your support, we will make a difference in the future of the family.

YOU are a Rightwing Extremist and a “Threat to our Nation’s Security”!

In UN on April 29, 2009 at 11:22 am

ufilogoIn a new report from the US Department of Homeland Security, conservatives, not terrorists, are named as the #1 threat to the nation’s security. Citizens standing for conservative values including those who are pro-life are named as right winged extremists whose activities need to be monitored.

The Obama administration is trying to silence the activities of pro-family citizens and groups – while they destroy families throughout the world.

We cannot stand by and allow the voice for families to be silenced. This is why we are urgently asking you to make the most generous contribution you can possibly make.

United Families International depends completely on individual donors – like you. We know times are tough. But, we must fight this growing threat, and we cannot do it without you!

Just recently, the Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton, announced the Obama administration’s plans at the UN and around the world. In a bold move, she publicly defined “reproductive health and rights” as including abortion and the intention of the US to push abortion around the world.

United Families has been fighting at the UN for over 30 years. We will continue to be your voice representing the values you hold dear – but we cannot continue without your help.

Unfortunately, fighting against the constant attacks on the family is not free. Just to inform you of the growing threat against the family costs United Families over $50 thousand a year. This dollar amount includes monitoring federal and state legislative bodies, UN policy and the actual reporting of anti-family initiatives.

Without your financial help, we cannot continue to alert you of what is happening at the UN and here at home.  Click HERE to make a donation.

25 for UFI

In The Family on April 1, 2009 at 6:25 pm

25 for UFIThe values that we stand for are under attack. Motherhood, fatherhood, marriage, life, liberty, and family are all in the crosshairs of radical and liberal organizations and governments. The opposition wants abortion to become a basic human right. They want parents and religion replaced with government. They want to destroy marriage all together. The anti-family movement is hard at work at your state legislature and in Washington, D.C., they take their agenda to the United Nations and seek to topple the institution of the family around the globe. Liberals have a stronghold on Europe, and they are looking to expand.

For more than 30 years United Families International (UFI) has fought against the anti-family opposition. UFI representatives have traversed the globe defending the unborn and protecting the traditional family. Local UFI chapters watch state legislatures and work with pro-family lawmakers to ensure that the family has a voice inside statehouses across the country. Our ECOSOC status at the UN allows UFI to collaborate with UN delegates to insert pro-family language into UN treaties and resolutions. At times when others are weak, UFI stands their ground and protects the family values that we hold dear.

25 for UFI is your chance to join United Families International in the fight for the family. 25 for UFI seeks to find 1,000 individuals who will give $25 for the protection of motherhood, fatherhood, marriage, life, liberty and family. The 25 for UFI Campaign has almost zero overhead, so you may rest assured that your donation will go directly to the international battle for the family. Join us, stand with UFI, and be a part of this worthy cause.

Your financial contribution keeps the work moving forward (and as a bonus, is 100% tax-deductible).

United Families Comes to Minnesota

In Meet UFI on March 31, 2009 at 10:01 am

ufilogoUnited Families Minnesota is the state affiliate of United Families International. As a non-profit, non denominational organization, we invite all citizens of the state to unite with us as we work to defend and promote marriage and the family in Minnesota. As a chapter of United Families International we also support UFI’s many national and international activities to preserve marriage and the family around the world.

United Families Minnesota is creating a grassroots voice to defend the family throughout the state. To learn how YOU can help protect the family visit our new website at: www.unitedfamiliesmn.org. You will find blogs, poll questions and many resources that make YOUR involvement in winning the cultural war against families easy and informative!

We invite you to participate with United Families Minnesota in:

  • Defending the family,
  • Educating the public, and
  • Equipping policy makers with research, facts and logical arguments in favor of the family and the unborn.

If you are interested in learning how to take an active role in protecting families in your community, please contact, Lynn Park, Director UFI Minnesota, at unitedfamiliesmn@unitedfamilies.org.

Please forward this to your friends and family members. We believe that through a grassroots movement, we can secure a safe future for families in Minnesota.

What’s Ahead for 2009?
We at UFMN pledge to develop the pro-family momentum in 2009 by standing up and being counted as those who champion the family. Our 2009 goals include:

  • Upholding the five respects of United Families: family, marriage, life, parental rights and sovereignty.
  • Sending regular, timely UFMN correspondence to our Minnesota readership.
  • Increasing our associations statewide.
  • Sponsoring community-based educational programs throughout the state.
  • Promoting family policy through the state legislative process, in our communities and in our public schools.

In order to more effectively serve you, our www.unitedfamiliesmn.org is up and running! We want to be a resource for Minnesotans in education, community involvement and state legislation. There is no better time to be involved and there are many ways to contribute.

1. Make a financial donation. United Families Minnesota is an entirely volunteer organization. No officers or board members are paid for their time and effort – we simply love the work of defending the family! But, defending the family does take financial means. While we stretch every dollar that comes to us, we’d love to reach more Minnesotans through our grassroots efforts. Your financial contribution keeps the work moving forward (and as a bonus, is 100% tax-deductible).

2. Volunteer with us. Do you have an interest in pro-family legislation? Would you like to be a liaison from UFMN to your local school district or attend a committee at the capital? Are you already keeping a watchful eye on your community but would like more support? We’d love to hear from you! unitedfamiliesmn@unitedfamilies.org

3. Be educated by adding UFMN to your list of frequently visited websites, by reading our emails (like this one!), and by attending our educational events. Education is key to recognizing those issues in our community that require our attention. When we are aware of these needs we are often motivated with a desire to get involved. Your efforts can make a huge difference.

We appreciate all that you have done to promote the family in Minnesota. While much has been done, the work has just begun. You are an essential part of victory for the Minnesota family.

Very soon you will receive a legislative update of bills and issues that need your immediate attention. Please look for it and send it to all you friends and family.

We look forward to 2009 and the challenges and opportunities that will come our way as we stand for the family and the essential values that will build a successful state. Won’t you stand with us? Our children need us to support this great work.

Beetle Blogger: We Are In The Fight Of Our Lives

In UN on March 23, 2009 at 10:14 am

Beetle Blogger posted the following piece:

The other day on Voice of the Nation, we talked with Laura Knaperek, a United Families International representative who was at the United Nations last week to help support and protect the family. Our time ran out on the show before she was able to tell us the conclusion of what happened during the last day of their time at the U.N., this is from their official report:

“The final three days were blurred into one long day as the delegates worked until 2 a.m. on Wednesday and until 7:30 a.m. on Thursday. The delegates, and those of us who had stayed up all night with them, had only two hours to prepare for the final round of negotiations on Friday. Negotiations became so intense on Thursday night that delegates from pro-family nations would need to leave the room to get rejuvenated by the support and nourishment brought by our small coalition of pro-family organizations. The large International Planned Parenthood Federation had employed a large, imposing man to represent them. Several times United Families International representatives had to block the door to the negotiating room so he would not enter to influence the proceedings.

It was amazing to watch the intimidation tactics that were used in an attempt to force small countries, who want to protect families and the unborn child, to change their votes. It was apparent that the European Union and the United States were attempting to use various persuasive means to convince smaller, pro-family countries to join them in supporting abortion language.

One delegate from a small country told us that he finally yelled at the other delegates, “I cannot join you! It would go against the instructions from my capital! It would go against ideals of the people in my country! And, it would go against my own personal beliefs! I will not change my vote!”

This brave delegate continued to stand strong despite the agonizing, tortuous attacks he was getting. At times, he came out of the room to talk to us and to vent his feelings before going back in to face the opposition again.

During the two weeks of CSW, we saw many delegates abandon the principles of their country and their citizens. We saw delegates fawning over the EU and the US in an attempt to gain favor and money from them by supporting their ideas. We also saw delegates who came from small countries stand up against the tidal wave of pressure that was exerted against them.

The Commission on the Status of Women lasts for two weeks. It is hard to believe that in two weeks so much can happen that affects families. There were many tears shed at the conclusion. It is wonderful to know that because a small group of pro-family organizations teamed up with a small group of pro-family delegates, the family was protected one more time.” —Beverly Rice, UFI

I used to think that what happened at the U.N. stayed at the U.N. but in becoming an active participant in the political conversation I have learned otherwise. We in the United States need to give closer heed to the goings on in this group or it will be hijacked for purposes against our interests.

The Obama Administration is the first to take this body seriously and is in the process of pushing through treaties formed years ago including the UNCRC which usurps parental rights and CEDAW which takes direct aim at the core of the family through it’s mothers.

Barbara Boxer is currently pushing for both of these treaties to be ratified by the United States Senate. She believes she has the votes or the muscle to force these treaties through. If she succeeds and these treaties are enacted into law, they will supercede all state and federal laws. Even the Constitution will have no protection for us because as it says in Article VI, paragraph 2:

“…all Treaties made, or which shall be made, under the Authority of the United States, shall be the supreme Law of the Land; and the Judges in every State shall be bound thereby, any Thing in the Constitution [of any State] or Laws of any State to the Contrary notwithstanding.”

This my friends, is what a ticking time bomb looks like. The adoption of these treaties would take away the sovereignty of our nation and hand it over to world body consensus. Handing over our sovereignty voluntarily? Pressuring smaller nations into giving up their moral convictions? There is nothing about the United Nations that I want. Europe is morally bankrupt, why would I want my beloved country to answer to their views?

To the one man who spoke out for families and the small handful of delegates who stood strong against the belligerent tide, you have my complete respect, thanks and admiration. You are heroes.

I first heard this story early this week and have not been able to get the picture out of my head since.

As Laura said. We are in the fight of our lives.
