Senate sneaks federally funded abortion in the back door.

In Abortion, Healthcare on October 15, 2009 at 3:18 pm

Health Care OverhaulAfter months of deliberation and debate the Senate Finance Committee finally passed its health care bill on Tuesday. During debates pro-life lobbyists and Senators worked to guarantee that federally funded abortion would not be included in the bill. And despite defeating Sen. Orrin Hatch’s proposed amendment explicitly prohibiting federal funding for abortion, the bill’s supporters claimed it would leave abortion off the table.

Well, they were half-way honest.

The bill does not explicitly provide federal funding for abortions; however it does provide alternative means for low-income families to receive federal subsidies for abortion.

According to the Baptist Press, the bill:

– allows tax credits and cost-sharing subsidies for lower-income people to be used to purchase private insurance plans that cover elective abortions. The bill requires the insurance companies to segregate their internal funds and not use federal dollars to pay for the abortions. Critics call it an accounting gimmick.

– requires that each area of the country provide at least one plan that pays for elective abortions and one plan that does not pay for them.

The bill still has to be combined with the another bill before heading to the Senate floor, but it appears likely that future iterations of the health care bill will demand our tax dollars to support the abortion of unborn children.

Woman Confesses to “Abortion Addiction” in New Memoir

In Abortion on October 14, 2009 at 2:00 pm

impossible motherhoodA new memoir was released yesterday detailing the experience of a woman “addicted to abortion.” In the memoir, Impossible Motherhood: Testimony of an Abortion Addict. Irene Vilar not only admits to having 15 abortions in 17 years, but also chronicles the pathology that led to each intentional pregnancy and subsequent abortion. She claims her intention in writing the memoir is not to enter into the abortion debate, as she is adamantly pro-choice. Rather she and her publishers are promoting the book as a tale of female suffering, failure, and, ultimately, triumph that will inspire other woman.

However, with a foreword by feminist Robin Morgan and the less than subtle title, it is hard to imagine the book cannot contribute to the abortion debate. People are already beginning to take positions. Those on the pro-abortion side claim the memoir reaffirms only that all women have abortions for different reasons that laws cannot account for and that Vilar’s pathology is another indicator of the mental strain suffered by women in a male dominated society. Those in support of life, obviously, site the book as a fitting example of the barbarism of abortion and the violence it causes in the lives of woman and children alike.

Yet, what I find most appalling and disquieting about the memoir is how easily the lives aborted by Vilar are entirely ignored and her abortions equated to anorexia, drug abuse, and alcoholism. The publisher, Judith Gurewich, emphasized this point as she described her response to the memoir:

I never saw this story as having much to do with abortion, except that it happened to be the target of her pathology or her neurosis. Her behaviour is very, very similar to anorexia or bulimia. It’s some kind of an addiction where she wants to impose her own rule on her own body. The fact that, of course, this involves a more complicated target makes it rather different.

The memoir radically reconfirms how important it is for the pro-abortion community to refuse to acknowledge the tie between abortion and the life of a baby. And it even more radically confirms how necessary it is us to never stop reminding the world of the tiny lives lost with a woman’s right to choose.

Center for Reproductive Rights Attacks Rights of Unborn in Oklahoma

In Abortion on October 14, 2009 at 1:11 pm

babyThe Center for Reproductive Rights is once again attacking the rights of unborn. Last week they filed a suit challenging a new Oklahoma state law (H.B. 1595) that would put a stop to sex-selective abortions and increase the state’s abortion reporting requirements beginning November 1.

The ban on sex-selective abortions would protect female babies from being aborted due to the surprisingly prevalent cultural preference for male over female babies, and the enhanced abortion reporting requirements, the most comprehensive in the country, would provide qualitative as well as quantitative analysis of abortion practices. With information on why and when women seek abortion, the state and other institutions would be better equipped to establish programs that address the needs of women who resort to abortion without better alternatives. Both pieces of the legislation would go a long way to protecting our state’s women, born and unborn alike.

Yet, the Center for Reproductive rights, an organization that claims to protect female rights, is not interested in protecting unborn girls or finding solutions. Their concern is only for securing the unfettered right to abortion at any time and for any reason.

Support for abortion dropping!

In Abortion on October 5, 2009 at 3:48 pm

Good news! Our efforts are not wasted. New research indicates the support for abortion is decreasing.

A new Pew Research Center poll released Thursday shows that support for legal abortions has dropped 11 percent since last year. In 2007 and 2008 the Pew center found 54% of American taking a pro-abortion position, and only 40% taking pro-life position. The most recent study showed those numbers changing to 47% in support of legal abortion and 44% opposed.

This can be added to similarly encouraging findings by another polls earlier this year. In August, a Gallup poll found 47% of Americans identified themselves as pro-life, whereas only 46% supported abortion. Although the numbers are not ideal, they demonstrate that there is definitely a cultural shift taking place in support of life. No matter how you cut it, that is encouraging news.

Good News Comes in Threes: Utah, California & The Nation

In The Family on June 1, 2009 at 9:45 am

One…Two…Three. United Families Utah and the pro-family movement is making a difference!

1. Utah’s Next Governor Supports Traditional Marriage

At a recent news conference on Capitol Hill, Lt. Gary Herbert, soon to be Governor Herbert, was asked by a reporter “Do you support same-sex civil unions?” Lt. Gov. Herbert clearly stated:

“I do not. I supported Amendment 3; I voted for Amendment 3; and for me, at least, the debate is over in Utah. The [State] Constitution’s been changed, amended. That being said, I do believe we have due respect for all people in Utah and ought to make sure we conduct ourselves in that way. Again, in my faith, I believe we’re all brothers and sisters of a loving Heavenly Father and we’re going to treat each other that way.”

In response to the follow-up question, “Did you support any of the ‘Common Ground Initiative’ [bills]?” the Lt. Governor responded:

“I supported Amendment 3 and I’m going to let that be my statement on the issue…”

United Families Utah along with the Sutherland Institute commends Lt Governor Herbert and looks forward to working with him in the future.

2. California Supreme Court Upholds Prop 8

Finally, California Supreme Court has upheld the voter’s voice: Same-sex marriage will not be allowed in California. The Christian Science Monitor reports “the measure only takes away the term ‘marriage’ – not a gay couple’s legal rights.”

3. Majority of Americans are Pro-Life

America has shifted to a Pro-Life position and the trend will continue into the future. A recent Gallup poll reveals more Americans are “Pro-Life” than “Pro-Choice” for first time since 1995 when Gallup started gathering opinions on pro-life. Click here for more information.

It is evident that when we keep up the effort to reason and advocate for the family we can make a difference. Let us continue to reach out to those who will join our ranks to keep the tide rolling our way.

FRC Releases Powerful Video – ‘100 Days of Change for the Family’

In The Family on May 7, 2009 at 9:38 am

From LifeSiteNews.com: Washington D.C. – On April 29, the Family Research Council (FRC) released a powerful video report on the devastating first 100 Days of the Obama presidency. The report dramatically exposes the negative impact of the Obama Administration on life, marriage, the justice system and other family issues.

“This video provides indisputable evidence of the current Administration’s hostility to the values of faith and family,” said FRC President Tony Perkins. “This President and his advisors have a very purposeful agenda, one that is seeking to take our country in a radically different direction. Mr. Obama is personally winsome, but his agenda is destructive.”

The video reveals Obama’s 1. Change for the unborn, 2. Change in the stem cell debate, 3. Change in our justice system, 4. Change for marriage, 5. Change in government spending, 6. The planned radical reduction or elimination of charitable deductions and 7. Change in the economy.

The report uses the President’s own spoken words to emphasize how the change he is bringing about is radically different from what he has led the American people to believe he would do.

The video concludes with a repeated clip of Obama’s words, “Change has come to America”, which FRC says is a radical social agenda which preys on the most vulnerable members of our society.”

Gender Discrimination Achieved Through Sex-selection Abortions

In Abortion on May 6, 2009 at 7:30 am

ufilogoOne of the most discussed topics over the last 50 years is gender discrimination, formerly known as sexism or chauvinism. Whatever term used, the meaning is the same; one gender or sex is viewed as more valuable than the other.

Throughout most cultures, women have historically been the object of gender discrimination. Feminist groups have pointed out many ways in which women are discriminated against. Some include domestic violence, legal status, wage gap, rape, etc. Rarely is sex-selective abortion discussed, but it should be for many reasons.

The potential has always existed for discrimination through abortions but this issue is not often headline news. Since the mid-1980’s the capacity for discrimination has been greatly increased due to the development of advanced medical technologies, including the use of ultrasound machines that identify the gender of a child before it is born.

For the past 20 years, a world wide holocaust is taking place. Millions of unborn baby girls have been aborted…simply because they are girls. This practice is called sex-selection abortion and is defined by the United Nations as the “intentional killing of unborn females due to the preference for male offspring (also known as “son preference”).”

According to the United States CIA World Fact Book, China and India have the most skewed ratio of male to female new births. For every 100 baby girls born in China and India, about 120-130 baby boys are born. This pattern is alarming because the average ratio in other countries and formerly in both of these nations is much lower, closer to 105 boys for every 100 girls.

Cultural norms in both of these countries and the Chinese government’s mandated birth limit of one child, has the potential to wreak havoc on those countries and the rest of the world.

Sons are preferred for social and financial reasons, and government and norms create incentives for families to value sons, not daughters – the worst kind of gender discrimination. This results in sex-selection abortion as a means to provide a way for couples to ensure that their offspring will be boys. Unintended consequences include huge losses in female population.

In fact, according to a UNICEF report released in December 2006, about 7,000 fewer girls than expected are born daily in India, and about 10 million fewer girls than expected were born in the past 20 years.

China is fast becoming the land of missing women. A 1996 study conducted by a Chinese researcher claimed that 85 percent of aborted fetuses in Zhejiang, a rural county in China, were female. More recent studies conclude that sex-selection abortion of baby girls and female infanticide, the killing of new-born baby girls, are prevalent in every sector of Chinese society, more so in rural China.

The situation in China and India is cause for great concern. Serious ramifications and unintended consequences echo throughout the world. The consequences from sex-selection abortion, female infanticide and the imbalance of male and female ratios include increased rape, sex trafficking and prostitution, crime, societal unrest and obstruction to the development of democracy and prosperity. Ironically, reducing the female population increases female discrimination.

The practice of sex-selection abortion carries with it many complicated issues that involve ethics, morals and fundamental human rights. Although it is most often discussed in the realm of medical ethics, sex-selection can easily be viewed as a breach of human rights. The selective elimination of females in the prenatal state is an infringement of their right to equality and existence.

Arizona Congressmen Trent Franks wrote in The Washington Times, “Regardless of one’s position on abortion, this form of discrimination should horrify every American. The idea of killing a baby simply because she is a girl is reprehensible. Unsurprisingly, a March 2006 Zogby International poll found that 86 percent of Americans supported a prohibition on sex-selection abortion. Indeed, what good are the hard-won liberties of voting and other women’s rights if babies may still be aborted simply for being girls?”

Another concern among population experts is the frequency with which sex-selective abortions are performed and the reason they are executed.

“Designer families” are becoming more and more popular with European and American couples. Using today’s technology to “design” the number, type and sex of their families has geneticists, ethicists, pro-life and pro-family experts alarmed over the potential harm this practice will have on children, families and society as a whole, and especially on women.

United Families International has been watching the progression of sex-selection abortion for several years and has watched in horror as those that fight for the rights of women at the UN and around the world neglect to stop the worst violation against women; one that all NGOs (non-government organizations) can and should passionately rally behind.

Hopefully the “choice” crowd will recognize that this practice is not about the right to have an abortion, it is about a woman’s right to live and be valued as a human being. Being a girl should not be a choice. Being a girl should be a right. Being a girl should be valued.

State Lawmakers Clash with Planned Parenthood Officials Over Undercover Footage; Unedited Undercover Videos Submitted to TN Law Enforcement

In Abortion on May 4, 2009 at 7:07 am

ufilogoMEMPHIS, April 30 — Following the release of undercover footage from a Memphis Planned Parenthood clinic, state lawmakers have introduced legislation that could divert taxpayer subsidies from Planned Parenthood in Tennessee. In response to Planned Parenthood of Greater Memphis Region’s contesting the veracity of the footage, the group responsible for filming, Live Action, has sent the state Attorney General and Memphis District Attorney an unedited version for review. The full footage is also on YouTube for public viewing at: http://youtube.com/watch?v=IvAGwJcs6c8

Lila Rose, 20-year-old president of Live Action, says the unedited video further exposes Planned Parenthood’s reckless counseling practices. When Lila, posing as a 14-year-old girl impregnated by a 31-year-old man, mentions, “My boyfriend said he could pay for everything–But he shouldn’t come here to pay ’cause you’ll see him, right?” the counselor replies, “It doesn’t matter. As long as your parents are not here and can’t identify him, he can just pay and that’s it. He could be like your older brother or whatever.” Tennessee law states that a minor must have parental consent before undergoing an abortion.

Rose commends the Tennessee state lawmakers, led by Senate Speaker Ron Ramsey and Sen. Jack Johnson, who have questioned the state’s over $700,000 funding of Planned Parenthood. “Why would citizens tolerate paying the bills of an organization that protects statutory rapists and victimizes young girls? This is the sad result of the careless abortion-first mentality that has persisted at Planned Parenthood for decades.”

On Monday, Planned Parenthood Greater Memphis Region CEO Barry Chase sent an email to state legislators asking them to stop the bill and claimed that Live Action’s president, Lila Rose, refused to send his organization the unedited footage, even though neither Rose nor Live Action received any correspondence from Planned Parenthood.

“We have not received a request from Planned Parenthood for the raw footage, so their efforts to raise doubts about the validity of the tapes are made only to mislead,” Rose said in response. “The typical last-ditch effort of Planned Parenthood is to wantonly suggest that the unedited tapes might prove them innocent. But to better illustrate the deliberate cover up of statutory rape and abuse by Planned Parenthood, we have made the entire video public.”

Live Action has also responded to gross errors in Mr. Chase’s email to legislators: “It is all the more troubling to think that even a novice counselor at Planned Parenthood would know to recommend this law-evasion strategy. How prevalent must law-evasion be at Planned Parenthood clinics when even the ‘interpreters’ are implicated?” states Live Action’s letter to TN lawmakers. See the letter here: LiveAction.org/memphis/letter.html.

Live Action has released similar footage from five other clinics, located in Arizona and Indiana, as part of its Mona Lisa Project, which shows Planned Parenthood employees as they respond negligently to reports of statutory rape and offer secret abortions instead. Find out more at LiveAction.org.

Clinton: Abortion is ‘Reproductive Health’

In Abortion on April 24, 2009 at 1:12 pm

ufilogoFrom CBNNews.com:

Secretary of state Hillary Clinton spent a second day on Capitol Hill discussing foreign affairs and the exchange she had over abortion with a Republican congressman is getting a lot of attention in pro-life circles.

Rep. Chris Smith, R-NJ, began by calling Clinton out on her reception of the Margaret Sanger Award from Planned Parenthood in March.

“As I think you know, in 2008 alone Planned Parenthood killed more than 305,000 children by abortion in the United States alone and millions more world wide,” he said.

Smith then questioned Clinton on the whether the Obama administration had plans to overturn or weaken pro-life laws in African and Latin American countries.
“Does the United States definition of the term reproductive health or reproductive services or reproductive rights include abortion?” he asked.

Clinton did not comment on Margaret Sanger, but responded by saying that family planning is an important part of women’s health.

“Reproductive health includes access to abortion,” Clinton replied. “That I believe should be safe, legal, and rare. We are now an administration that will protect the rights of women including their rights to reproductive healthcare.”

Student Undercover Video Shows Tennessee Planned Parenthood Coaching 14-year-old To Lie About Age Of “Boyfriend”

In Abortion on April 20, 2009 at 5:35 am

ufilogoMEMPHIS, April 20–A counselor at a Planned Parenthood clinic in Memphis, TN was caught on hidden camera coaching a 14-year-old girl to lie to a judge so he would not find out about her 31-year-old boyfriend and the girl could obtain a waiver for an abortion without her parents’ knowledge. This is the sixth Planned Parenthood clinic implicated in a developing multi-state child abuse scandal involving the deliberate suppression of evidence of statutory rape.

Lila Rose, 20-year-old UCLA student and president of the nonprofit Live Action, entered Planned Parenthood’s Memphis Health Center undercover and told a counselor that she was 14 years old, pregnant by her 31-year-old “boyfriend”, and needed a secret abortion so her parents would not find out about her sexual relationship with the older man. Tennessee Code 37-1-605 requires health professionals to report suspected cases of sexual abuse of minors to law enforcement immediately.

The Planned Parenthood counselor tells Rose on camera, “Look, if we keep this conversation I’m gonna have to talk to my manager and yeah, [your boyfriend]’s gonna get in trouble,” but promises, “I’m not gonna tell anybody, ok?” She adds, “And please don’t say that I told you this.” When Rose tells the counselor she thinks her boyfriend will get in trouble if her parents find out, the counselor advises Rose to lie about the man’s age when speaking to a judge in order to obtain a bypass of Tennessee’s parental consent law for abortion: “Don’t mention it. Just say you have a boyfriend 17 years old…whatever.”

“The Planned Parenthood counselor hears about the abuse, says she should report it, decides to remain silent, then tells me to lie to the judge about 31-year-old man.” Rose notes of the video.

The new video marks the fifth in Live Action’s “Mona Lisa Project,” a nationwide undercover investigation that documents Planned Parenthood’s repeated noncompliance with state mandatory reporting laws for sexual abuse of minors. Tennessee is the third state to be implicated in the controversy, along with Arizona and Indiana.

“This is the sixth clinic we have recorded that manipulates the law and covers up sexual abuse. Planned Parenthood’s abortion-first mentality makes it operate as an advocate for terrible crimes against children,” Rose states. “What more do authorities need to see before holding this organization accountable for its institutionalized indifference to statutory rape and sexual abuse of children?”

Millions Stand For Life!

In Abortion on April 17, 2009 at 11:16 am

ufilogoSPAIN – March, 2009
The forces of life stood together in support of an amazing movement called Rallies for the Right to Live, which was held in the country of Spain on Sunday, March 29th. Momentously, over 800 world wide organizations representing over 250 million men and women supported one of the greatest shows of support for the unborn. United Families International was one of the organizations that voiced its support.

The Spanish Government got the message loud and clear as 500 thousand individuals protested in over 80 cities across Spain on behalf of the defense for the right to live.

Protesters called on socialist Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero to stop the proposed legislation that would liberalize the abortion laws and threatened to continue a wave of pro-life demonstrations throughout the legislative session. In Madrid alone, over 100 thousand marchers were heard chanting the slogan, “There is no right to kill, there is a right to live”.

Under the current law abortion is permitted up to 12 weeks in cases of rape and 22 weeks in cases of “fetal malformation”. The proposed legislation allows abortion on demand up to 14 weeks and 22 weeks if a threat to the health of the mother or “fetus” is certified by a doctor. The legislation takes consent away from parents of girls 16 to 18.

One of the organizers of the movement, Ignacio Arsuago of Hazte Oir (Make Yourself Heard) said, “This is only the beginning, a true plan of support for pregnant women (is needed) so that they can give birth to their children and as a last resort, if necessary, give them up for adoption.”

At the Madrid Rally, the Madrid Declaration on Abortion was read. The document, signed by over 300 medical experts – including researchers, professors, journalists, professionals, and specialists in humanities and social sciences, defends the “absolute value of the right to life by taking sides against the initiative promoted by the Zapatero’s Government of changing the juridical status of abortion with the aim of introducing abortion without restrictions in Spain.”

Lola Velarde- President of the European Network of the Institute of Family Policy, another organization that sponsored the Rallies was quoted as saying, “The protection of the rights of the child in the prenatal period is a value shared through all civilizations and is a generator of authentic alliance. This fact has been manifested through the support shown from so many associations from around the world.”

Groups from France, Germany, Switzerland, Norway, Malta, Poland, United Kingdom, Portugal, Slovakia, Hungary, United States, Canada, Mexico, Colombia, Argentina, Peru, Chile, Panama and Brazil among others have supported Spain’s initiative in defense of the rights of the unborn child.

United Families International lent its support to our allies across the Atlantic. We were quoted as saying, “We at United Families International give thanks to our pro-life friends in Spain for all they are doing to stop the needless destruction of human life and the institution of the family. Government liberalization of abortion laws must be stopped. We encourage all to be involved in this most important battle of our lives”

Women Exploited by Abortion, NancyJo Mann’s Story

In Abortion on April 14, 2009 at 9:25 pm

ufilogoThis testimony was originally published in 1987 in the book Aborted Women, Silent No More.

My name is Nancyjo Mann. I am one of the 16 million of women who has had an abortion since 1973. I’ve seen this from all angles; from the pro-choice side, the pro-life side, and most importantly, from the side of a woman who has experienced abortion.

I exercised my “right to choose,” and I became a victim of this Pandora’s Box. It was a pretty, tempting treasure. It promised to solve all my problems and restore full control over my life. But instead, this “right,” this “gift,” was filled with sufferings and regret which I could never have anticipated or imagined. What follows here is my story. It is not a unique one. Millions of others have been seduced by the same false promises. Mine is but one example of the abortion reality.

My mother made all the arrangements. She called my ob/gyn and he said he wouldn’t do an abortion, much less a second trimester. He told her that the only one in town that would do it was Dr. P. F-, a prominent doctor in that area. Without losing a moment of time for reflection or doubts, my mother and I went over to see him. When he learned that I was seeking an abortion, he immediately had me brought into an examination room.

After a quick examination, my abortionist told me that I would have to have the abortion done within the next 24-hours or I would be outside the limit of the law. Of course this wasn’t true, but I didn’t know that then. Abortions are legal throughout all three trimesters, right up to the day before birth, and I was still well within the second trimester. He just used this little lie to pressure me into making a quick decision.

The second lie [the abortionist told me] came during my “counseling session,” when I asked, “What are you going to do to me if I have this abortion?” All he did was look at my stomach and say, “I’m going to take a little fluid out, put a little fluid in, you’ll have severe cramps and expel the fetus.” “Is that all?” I asked. “That’s it.” “O.K.,” I said. It was only later, after the abortion had begun, that I was to learn that what he described as “cramps” was actually the labor process. These “severe cramps” were not just going to make my pregnancy magically disappear. Instead, I was going to go through all the motions of normal childbirth–water breaking, labor pains, etc. The only difference was that the baby I would deliver would be dead.

After telling me I had to have the abortion within the next 24-hours, Dr. F- scheduled me for a saline abortion in the hospital that same afternoon. Ironically, a little while after my abortion a nurse who worked at the hospital told me that Fong always scheduled his abortions for the same day that the patient contacted him. At one time he had admitted patients to the hospital the night before the surgery so that they could be observed and their food intake limited. But when some of his patients had changed their minds during the night, sometimes after questioning nurses about what actually would happen, he began to insist on doing the abortions immediately. Too many patients, and profits, were slipping out the front door.

The third lie in my “counseling” was a lie of omission. He never told me any of the risks involved. Only later did I find out that if he had hit a vein, the saline solution could have made me violently ill or caused any number of other complications, including death. He told me none of this. Instead he made it sound like a simple and relatively painless procedure.

I was so naive. I trusted him. After all, he was a doctor. A respected and educated man. And like everyone else, I had always heard that legal abortion was “safe and easy.” It wasn’t until he had me on the table that I began to question these illusions. It wasn’t until he pulled out an enormous syringe that I became scared. The needle alone was four inches long. Suddenly I realized that this was not going to be as easy as he had implied.

The first thing he did was withdraw 60 cc’s of amniotic fluid. At that point I started to feel afraid for my baby. I could feel her thrashing about, scared by this intrusion. I wanted to scream out, “Please, stop. Don’t do this to me!” But I just couldn’t get it out. I was petrified with fear.

After the fluid was withdrawn, he injected 200 cc’s of the saline solution–half a pint of concentrated salt solution. From then on, it was terrible. My baby began thrashing about–it was like a regular boxing match in there. She was in pain. The saline was burning her skin, her eyes, her throat. It was choking her, making her sick. She was in agony, trying to escape. She was scared and confused at how her wonderful little home had suddenly been turned into a death trap.

For some reason it had never entered my mind that with an abortion she would have to die. I had never wanted my baby to die; I only wanted to get rid of my “problem.” But it was too late to turn back now. There was no way to save her. So instead I talked to her. I tried to comfort her. I tried to ease her pain. I told her I didn’t want to do this to her, but it was too late to stop it. I didn’t want her to die. I begged her not to die. I told her I was sorry, to forgive me, that I was wrong, that I didn’t want to kill her.

For two hours I could feel her struggling inside me. But then, as suddenly as it began, she stopped. Even today, I remember her very last kick on my left side. She had no strength left. She gave up and died. Despite my grief and guilt, I was relieved that her pain was finally over. But I was never the same again. The abortion killed not only my daughter; it killed a part of me.

Before that needle had entered my abdomen I had liked myself. Though I may have had my share of problems, I had seen myself as basically a good person. I wasn’t into any wild scenes. I was a good housewife and a loving mother. I was happy to be me. But when that needle entered my womb, when it pulled out the nurturing fluid of motherhood and replaced it with that venom of death, when the child I had abandoned suddenly began its struggle within me, I hated myself. It was that fast.

Every bit of self-esteem, every value I held dear, every hope of which I had ever dreamed–all were stripped away by the poison of that one vain act. Every memory of joy was now tainted by the stench of death. That moment of desperation which had led me to this “healer’s table” had now positioned itself as ruler of my life. I had abandoned myself to despair and despair was my future. There was no way to stop it. There was no way to put everything back the way it had been. I no longer had any control, any choice. I was powerless. I was weak. I was a murderer.

A little while after my baby stopped moving they gave me an intravenous injection to help stimulate labor. I was in hard labor for 12 hours, all through the night. When finally I delivered, the nurses didn’t make it to my room in time. I delivered my daughter myself at 5:30 the next morning, October 31st. After I delivered her, I held her in my hands. I looked her over from top to bottom. She had a head of hair, and her eyes were opening. I looked at her little tiny feet and hands. Her fingers and toes even had little fingernails and swirls of fingerprints.

Everything was perfect. She was not a “fetus.” She was not a “product of conception.” She was a tiny human being. The pathology report listed her as more than seven inches from head to rump. With her legs extended, she was over a foot long. She weighed a pound-and-a-half, more than many of the premature babies being saved in incubators in every hospital in the country. But these vital statistics did not mention her most striking trait: She was my daughter. Twisted with agony. Silent and still. Dead.

It seemed like I held her for ten minutes or more, but it was probably only 30 seconds because as soon as the nurses came rushing in, they grabbed her from my hands and threw her–literally threw her–into a bedpan and carried her away.

To add insult to injury, after my daughter was taken away, they brought another woman into the room to finish the last hour of her labor. But this woman wasn’t having an abortion. No, she had a beautiful, healthy baby boy. No words can describe how rough that was on me.

I was released from the hospital eight hours after the delivery. The official report filled out by my abortionist stated that the procedure had been completed with “no complications.” Three days later I went back into what felt like labor again, and I passed a piece of placenta about the size of my hand. It had been an incomplete abortion, a fact which had been missed by the pathology lab which had reported that the placenta had been delivered “intact.”

Soon afterwards I began to withdraw from those who loved me, especially from my family since they had supported and encouraged me to have the abortion. There was a part of me that didn’t want to be loved, especially by those who had known me before. I was filled with guilt and sorrow. I felt empty, and I lived under a constant feeling of dread. Newborn infants caught my eye and filled me with longing, but I was afraid to touch them. Whenever a friend would offer to let me hold her baby, I would always refuse. I was too afraid of my own destructiveness. I was terrified that I might somehow hurt another child…

FRC: If You Are Planned Parenthood, Crime Does Pay

In Abortion on April 10, 2009 at 9:03 am

ufilogoFrom the Family Research Council:

Planned Parenthood (PP) released its annual report this week. It would appear that for Planned Parenthood, crime does pay — as long as it is crime against humanity. Last year, while the rest of the nation was seeing a downward trend in relation to abortions, Planned Parenthood was perpetrating over 15,000 more abortions than the year before, for a grand total of 305,310 (while apparently offering no post-abortion counseling to the women who enter into PP’s “clinics.”) Added to this mayhem, Planned Parenthood distributed over 1.4 million “emergency contraceptive kits” containing the abortifacient called the “morning after pill.” During this time the organization only did 4,912 adoption referrals. All this proved very profitable to Planed Parenthood as they posted a net profit of $1.014 BILLION. A clear 34 percent of that figure came from you – the U.S. taxpayer. Government grants to Planned Parenthood allowed the abortion industry to spend on a variety of things including contributing $10 million to elect President Obama and spending close to $1 million to lobby Congress for even more cash, claiming poverty in this time of economic crisis! This investment by Planned Parenthood has paid handsomely as increases in government funding have led to an increase in the number of abortions the group performs. Only when the abortion industry is completely separated from the government funding spigot will President Obama have any credibility when he says he wants to “reduce the number of abortions.” Local governments like Orange County, California and Corpus Christi, Texas have realized this and defunded their local PP’s – when will Congress?

AGAINST ALL ODDS: PRO-FAMILY CPD NATIONS WIN REPRODUCTIVE RIGHTS WAR

In UN on April 8, 2009 at 8:41 am

ufilogoThe Commission on Population and Development (CPD) met last week at the United Nations (UN). Not only did the members of the Commission develop policy, but some stood to courageously fight the ongoing battle to protect the family and innocent lives.

This year’s CPD was also the fifteenth anniversary of the International Commission on Population and Development (ICPD) that was held in Cairo in 1994. Formerly low-key, with the new Obama administration feeling its oats, CPD was a nest of activity and debate.

Radical non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and “progressive” member nations openly plotted on how to make reproductive rights the issue of the hour. Two vastly differing points of view were at odds – control and reduce population vs. support services to meet population needs.

It was clear early on that the United States, Canada and the European Union (with a few exceptions) were going to use this conference to push through language that could be interpreted as abortion rights. United Families and other pro-family organizations were on hand to witness some of the historic events that occurred.
The original draft document for CPD included language such as “comprehensive sex education”, “safe abortion”, “sexual and reproductive health and rights”. The latter term had never been used or defined by the body, and would most certainly be used by our opponents to promote the right to abortion. At an informal U.S. delegate/NGO meeting, the U.S. delegates were asked to define “reproductive rights” to which they declined.

United by the belief that life is sacred and that the family is first, Muslim and Catholic nations, fought hard against the pro-abortion language and instead stressed the need for basic education and health care, clean water, economic development and sanitation.

Demographically aging nations such as Russia, Japan, Croatia and Bulgaria reported on their reduced population rate and the challenges it brings. Educating the CPD nations and the need to make marrying and having babies a popular alternative was an interesting reality. To learn more about the world population crisis – click here to see Demographic Winter – the Decline of the Human Family a production of SRB Documentary, LLC.

The final hours of CPD as reported by C-Fam in Lifesitenews.com tells a compelling story that illustrates the struggle smaller nations face when they go up against those with money and power. No matter, through caring enough about the issues of life and family, courage abounds.

Malta and St. Lucia, two of the smallest UN member nations, had their delegates bravely stand and defend their pro-life laws. Both feared that terms such as “‘reproductive rights,’ ‘reproductive services’ and ‘control of fertility’ from the ICPD provision on safe abortion “could lend itself to multiple interpretations, implying among other things, that abortion can be completely free of medical and other psychological risks, while ignoring altogether the rights of the unborn.”

On the last day of the third reading of the document, right before adoption of the draft document, the most controversial language – “sexual and reproductive health and rights” remained. When all appeared to be lost, the Muslim nation of Iran stood in protest at the use of the language. Echoing throughout the chamber, Iran’s delegate calmly stated that this language had never been included in any negotiated UN document before and insisted that the Commission follow protocol and use the “carefully negotiated language” from the Cairo ICPD Program of Action; language that all agree does not create any right to abortion.

Knowing that consensus was slipping away, the Chairwoman from Mexico put the meeting on hold and left the room. Upon her return she announced the acceptance of the Iranian proposal and struck the “sexual and reproductive health and rights” language from the document.

Consensus was reached, but seeing an opportunity, other pro-family nations including Ireland, Poland, Chile, Malta, Saint Lucia, Comoros and the Holy See stated for the record that the CPD adopted document did not create any new rights, nor did terms accepted in the document like “reproductive rights,” “reproductive health services” and “sexual and reproductive health”, “support, endorse or promote” abortion. Saint Lucia compelled to push on, emphasized the need for the Commission to recognize that not only did the document not create any new rights; it also recognized “the universal right to conscience can in no way be overridden or weakened.”

Against all odds a handful of dedicated and brave nations stood up to forces beyond our comprehension to protect families, life and national sovereignty. Doing what is right is not always easy. However, the presence of organizations like ours at these important UN conferences is imperative; making the odds better for families.

Obama Administration Proposing To Rescind Laws That Protect Health Care Providers

In Abortion on March 30, 2009 at 12:55 pm

ufilogoThe sanctity of life is being attacked from all sides. From the United Nations to your doctor’s office, treaties, money and new regulations are forcing unwilling participants to participate in the act of abortion.

As you know, tax dollars from the United States are now funding abortions throughout the world because President Obama overturned the Mexico City Policy which previously barred recipients of any U.S. foreign aid from performing or promoting abortion services, as a method of family planning in other countries.

As a follow-up, the Obama Administration is now proposing to rescind the Freedom of Conscience laws that protect health care providers of faith. In other words, nurses, doctors, pharmacists, and hospitals will now be forced to offer abortion services or they could lose their ability to practice in their chosen profession.

We should all be very concerned. Just imagine if you or a family member had trouble finding adequate health care because those who practice medicine in your area had to leave their profession because of these regulations. This could be particularly devastating to rural areas or states with a high concentration of medical practitioners of faith. Both could be severely impacted because of the lack of health care available due to these new laws. Healthcare providers may resign from their professions. Hospitals will be shut down. And future doctors and nurses will choose another profession rather than be forced to participate in the destruction of life.

Currently, Catholic hospitals account for 15-20% of the hospital services provided in this country. Those hospitals might have to cease operations if they had to succumb to new regulations requiring them to offer abortion services.

There is something you can do. The process the Administration is using requires the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) to have a period of time to accept opinions from citizens. They are also required to review these opinions. We only have until April 9, 2009. Please take a moment and send a letter to the HHS asking them not to approve these discriminatory regulations. Click here

From the halls of the United Nations to the hospitals where the newborn babies lay, the Obama Administration is attempting to force us all to accept that taking the life of the unborn is a necessary act. They would like us all to believe that this is the opinion of the majority. We need to tell them that is not true! Please let them know that we will not be a party to this destruction of life! Act now to inform them that families throughout the world care about this issue and will not accept this type of discrimination upon their healthcare providers.

We at United Families International continue to work diligently to protect the life of the unborn. Our work at the international, national and state levels is vitally important to this cause. Please consider donating $25, $35, $50, or $100 TODAY so that we may continue to protect the lives of the unborn.

Hillary Clinton To Receive Planned Parenthood’s Highest Honor

In Abortion on March 26, 2009 at 3:04 pm

ufilogoTony Perkins and the Family Research Council report:

And the Award Goes to…

Tomorrow in Houston, Texas, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton is scheduled to receive Planned Parenthood’s highest honor–the 2009 Margaret Sanger Award. The gala, which takes place down the road from the construction of America’s largest-ever abortion facility, has been in the works since Hillary’s days in the Senate. To many, it reinforces the strong alliance between the Obama administration and the radical pro-abortion crowd.

As Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton is the most visible American ambassador. What better way to show her support for the President’s newest export–overseas abortion–than share the stage with one of the federal government’s prime partners in that effort? According to the organization’s press release, Clinton is being lauded as “a champion of women’s health and rights throughout her public service career.”

Of course, the question remains whether this award is even an honor. If “no one is pro-abortion,” as Barack Obama insists, then why agree to be celebrated by the number one supplier of abortion in America? It’s an organization whose founder embraced eugenics, targeted “the unfit” for “extinction,” and whose current staff is on record as accepting racially motivated donations in seven different clinics nationwide. It’s an organization that fights to bar parents from the medical decisions of their 12-year-old daughters. According to videos in at least four states, Planned Parenthood has been involved in serial statutory rape cover-ups. Allegations in California point to an estimated $180 million of fraud. In at least two states, Planned Parenthood petitioned for the construction of abortion clinics under false pretenses.

Really, is this an award that anyone–including Hillary Clinton–should covet? Its very name, the Margaret Sanger Award, is a tribute to a woman whose life’s mission was to “build a race of thoroughbreds.” Planned Parenthood’s long campaign to promote abortion on request, celebration of sexual libertinism, eugenics, and radical prejudice is the worst foreign policy message our nation could send–and tomorrow they crown their messenger.

United Families Report Success at CSW 2009!!!

In UN on March 18, 2009 at 4:34 pm

ufilogoWe were successful!!! Two weeks of concentrated negotiating, conjoling, writing, lobbying, and supporting have come to an end. At the conclusion of the 53rd Commission on the Status of Women (CSW), many in the pro-family coalition had slept less than four hours during the final 48 hours. But, it was worth it! We were able to remove the six references to “reproductive health services” (abortion) and insert six references to “family”!! This was a significant success! At one point there were no references to the family at all!

The final three days were blurred into one long day as the delegates worked until 2 a.m. on Wednesday and until 7:30 a.m. on Thursday. The delegates, and those of us who had stayed up all night with them, had only two hours to prepare for the final round of negotiations on Friday. Negotiations became so intense on Thursday night that delegates from pro-family nations would need to leave the room to get rejuvenated by the support and nourishment brought by our small coalition of pro-family organizations. The large International Planned Parenthood Federation had employed a large, imposing man to represent them. Several times United Families International representatives had to block the door to the negotiating room so he would not enter to influence the proceedings.

It was amazing to watch the intimidation tactics that were used in an attempt to force small countries, who want to protect families and the unborn child, to change their votes. It was apparent that the European Union and the United States were attempting to use various persuasive means to convince smaller, pro-family countries to join them in supporting abortion language. One delegate from a small country told us that he finally yelled at the other delegates, “I cannot join you! It would go against the instructions from my capital! It would go against ideals of the people in my country! And, it would go against my own personal beliefs! I will not change my vote!” This brave delegate continued to stand strong despite the agonizing, tortuous attacks he was getting. At times, he came out of the room to talk to us and to vent his feelings before going back in to face the opposition again.

During the two weeks of CSW, we saw many delegates abandon the principles of their country and their citizens. We saw delegates fawning over the EU and the US in an attempt to gain favor and money from them by supporting their ideas. We also saw delegates who came from small countries stand up against the tidal wave of pressure that was exerted against them.

The Commission on the Status of Women lasts for two weeks. It is hard to believe that in two weeks so much can happen that affects families. There were many tears shed at the conclusion. It is wonderful to know that because a small group of pro-family organizations teamed up with a small group of pro-family delegates, the family was protected one more time.

Now it is time for you to do as did these brave delegates. Now is the time for families to stand strong just as the delegates did this week. Now is the time for you to commit to the importance of families. Please show your commitment and support for what was accomplished by making a donation of $25, $35, $50, $100 or $200. We will continue to fight for your family with your help. Show us that the work we are doing is important to you.

Thank you for your support. It was for your family that we worked so hard and slept so little.

Live Action Undercover Video: Two Phoenix Planned Parenthood Clinics Conceal Sexual Abuse of 15-Year-Old

In Abortion on March 18, 2009 at 7:16 am

ufilogoPHOENIX, March 18, 2009 – Two more Planned Parenthood clinics in Phoenix, AZ were caught on tape concealing statutory rape. In a developing multi-state child abuse scandal, these are the fourth and fifth Planned Parenthood clinics implicated. Employees deliberately neglect their legal obligations to report statutory rape, and instead offer secret abortions.

Lila Rose and Jackie Stollar, both college students posing as 15-year-old girls, entered two Phoenix Planned Parenthood clinics undercover and told employees at one clinic that Stollar needed an abortion because her adult “boyfriend” had impregnated her, giving his age as 27-years-old at the second clinic.

Arizona state law requires law enforcement to be contacted immediately if an adult-child relationship is revealed. Failure to report incidents of sexual abuse are punishable under this law.

After Stollar explains that her boyfriend is “a lot older than me,” a staffer at the first clinic states: “we don’t ask any questions.” At the second clinic, upon hearing that the boyfriend is 27-years-old, the employee reassures the girls that “everything is confidential.” She also tells the girls she will not intervene: “I can’t say ‘Don’t’ you know or ‘I’m gonna go and do this.’ I cannot be that way, it’s not me.”

The videos are part of the “Mona Lisa Project,” a national undercover probe of Planned Parenthood clinics conducted by Live Action, a student-led non-profit. The project documents clinic employees on video as they respond to cases of statutory rape. In December 2008, the Mona Lisa Project exposed similar cases at two Planned Parenthood clinics in Indiana. As public scrutiny mounted, both clinics either fired or suspended employees, and state prosecutors launched investigations into Planned Parenthood of Indiana.

These are not the first instances in Arizona where Planned Parenthood has failed to report sexual abuse. In February, Live Action exposed a similar case in Tucson, Arizona. And in 2002, an Arizona judge found the abortion provider negligent for failing to report the sexual abuse of a 13-year-old girl by her 23-year-old foster brother.

“By keeping information about rapists confidential, Planned Parenthood enables sexual predators to continue violating young girls. If Arizona state authorities investigate Planned Parenthood’s statutory rape reporting practices, they can help bring an end to these crimes,” says Live Action’s president Lila Rose.

The Embryonic Stem Cell Debate: Beverly Rice on BNN’s ‘SqueezePlay’

In Stem Cells on March 17, 2009 at 3:53 pm

ufilogoOn March 9th, the Chicago Tribune reported: President Barack Obama made his most forceful break yet from his predecessor’s [George W. Bush] controversial scientific agenda on Monday, opening the door to a major expansion of government-funded research on embryonic stem cells and ordering federal agencies to strengthen the role of science in their decision-making.

Bush’s limitations on federal funding for embryonic stem cell experiments had become a touchstone for the anger among many scientists, as well as among advocates for patients who hope such research can lead to cures for a wide range of diseases.

Obama, speaking to an audience of scientists and patients in the East Room of the White House, acknowledged that many people “strongly oppose” the research, which destroys human embryos, but that his choice was to “vigorously support scientists” in the field.

Congressional Republicans and anti-abortion groups disputed the merits of embryonic stem cell research, saying recent breakthroughs on developing similar cells through alternative methods render it unnecessary.

“Today’s action is about forcing taxpayers to fund ethically troublesome — and unproven — research that destroys life,” Rep. Eric Cantor of Virginia, the House Republican whip, said in a statement.

From the blog of Nevada Right to Life we read: Douglas Johnson of National Right to Life Committee sounded an additional alarm today. “It is a sad day when the federal government will fund research that exploits living members of the human species as raw material for research,” said Johnson. “Obama’s order also places our society on a very steep, very slippery slope. Many researchers will not be satisfied to use only so-called surplus embryos. Many researchers are already demanding federal support for research in which human embryos would be created for the specific purpose of research, through human cloning and other methods, and there was nothing in the President’s remarks today to limit NIH to the use of so-called surplus embryos created in IVF clinics.”

On Tuesday, March 17th, UFI President, Beverly Rice appered on the Canada’s BNN to talk about the recent order signed by President Obama.  ”We will always choose life over anything else.  We do not believe that American tax dollars should be used to take life away,” explained Mrs. Rice.

Undercover Student Videos Help De-Fund Planned Parenthood

In Abortion on March 16, 2009 at 10:05 am

ufilogoLOS ANGELES, CA – Undercover videos produced by Live Action Films were used to help strip Planned Parenthood of the $292,000 in taxpayer funds it received from Orange County, CA. The videos, part of the ongoing Mona Lisa Project, clearly show Planned Parenthood employees ignoring the sexual abuse of minors, which mandatory reporting laws require clinicians to report.

Mark Bucher, a local resident and board member of the Family Action PAC, saw the videos and decided to find out if Orange County gave taxpayer dollars to Planned Parenthood. Bucher proceeded to uncover an intricate money trail unknown even to the Orange County Board of Supervisors, and found that Planned Parenthood received funds through the Orange County Health Care Agency but was never identified as the recipient.

“The distribution of public funds to Planned Parenthood through the Orange County Health Care Agency appeared to be a deliberate cover-up since it was nearly impossible to detect where the money was going from the County to several different health clinics,” said Bucher. “After watching the undercover videos from Live Action, it became clear to me that Planned Parenthood has a lot to hide.”

Bucher sent one of the undercover videos to every Orange County Supervisor, and encouraged them to cut Planned Parenthood’s Orange County subsidies. This week, the Orange Country Board of Supervisors unanimously voted to end taxpayer subsidies to Planned Parenthood.

“Regardless of one’s position on abortion, Planned Parenthood should not receive public funding because of their willingness to deliberately cover up sexual molestation and abuse. This ‘non-profit’ had a $115 million surplus last year, and certainly doesn’t need a bailout from our community,” continued Bucher.

Lila Rose, president of Live Action, is the UCLA student who went undercover in the videos to expose Planned Parenthood. She believes Mark Bucher has demonstrated a successful community model to be used across the country to end government subsidies to Planned Parenthood clinics.

“The undercover footage from the Mona Lisa Project continues to reveal a disturbing pattern in which Planned Parenthood repeatedly covers up the sexual abuse of minors,” said Rose. “Planned Parenthood needs to be held accountable and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law for harming young girls. It is my hope that others like Mark will investigate Parenthood in their local communities, and put a stop to the public funding.”

“The valuable evidence from Live Action’s investigations was crucial to de- funding Planned Parenthood in Orange County,” concluded Bucher. “I’m grateful for the courage shown by Lila Rose and her group to bring to light the crimes committed inside Planned Parenthood’s clinics.” To view the undercover footage from the Mona Lisa Project, visit www.liveaction.org.

College Buckles Under Public Pressure, Lifts Campus Ban On Pro-Life Students Who Videotaped Planned Parenthood Event

In Abortion on March 12, 2009 at 9:33 pm

ufilogoCLAREMONT, March 12, 2009—Pomona College banned two pro-life students from campus last week after they videotaped the question-and-answer session during a Planned Parenthood representative’s talk and asked the representative tough questions about recent Planned Parenthood scandals. Pomona rescinded its ban this week after facing strong opposition from students, faculty, and alumni. The pro-life students, David Daleiden, 20, and Kyle Kinneberg, 21, are members of the youth-led right-to-life advocacy group Live Action.

Daleiden and Kinneberg both attend Claremont McKenna College, part of the Claremont College Consortium together with Pomona and three other undergraduate institutions. A hand-delivered letter from Pomona’s Dean of Women Marcelle Holmes notified the students of the ban, claiming their videotaping had been “against college policy.” But Daleiden, President of Live Action’s Claremont chapter and Director of Research for the national organization, said Pomona never produced the specific policy they said his group had violated, and that he and Kinneberg were denied their due process rights under the Claremont Colleges’ Policy on Demonstrations.

“When alumni found out about this Orwellian situation, they were outraged,” explained Daleiden. “Pomona accused us of conspiring to ‘disrupt the proceedings, intimidate participants, and chill the free exchange of ideas,’” Daleiden said. “But nothing could be farther from the truth. We were entirely respectful when we asked our questions—as our video shows.”

The videotaping in question took place on February 19, during a presentation by Serena Josel, public affairs manager for Planned Parenthood of Los Angeles. Administrators told Daleiden that after the event, PPLA contacted Pomona College about his conduct. Daleiden notes that PPLA has extensive ties to Pomona, which regularly promotes internships and raises money for the abortion provider.

“It’s understandable that Planned Parenthood’s Serena Josel was angry at us for our recording—she made several spurious and even contradictory arguments defending Planned Parenthood’s lack of accountability for mandatory child abuse reporting,” Daleiden continued. “But campus disciplinary procedures should never be used as a tool for political retribution.”

“We are grateful to the Claremont McKenna alumni and administration who reacted quickly to correct this abuse,” Kinneberg added. “This is not the first time pro-lifers have been persecuted for questioning Planned Parenthood, but victories like this should inspire us never to be afraid to stand up for the truth.”

Colo. Court of Appeals: Woman can seek damages for “unwanted child”

In Abortion on March 10, 2009 at 5:36 pm

ufilogoFrom ADF:

In Dotson v. Dell L. Bernstein, P.C., M.D., No. 08CA0020 (Colo. App. March 5, 2009) the Colorado Court of Appeals ruled that Dionne Dotson can seek legal redress against an allegedly “medically negligent” abortionist for failing to terminate her pregnancy.

Plaintiff, Dionne Dotson, sought the services of defendant, Dell L. Bernstein, M.D., to terminate her unwanted pregnancy but later gave birth to a healthy baby. Plaintiff filed a complaint against defendant, alleging negligent medical treatment causing injuries resulting from the pregnancy, delivery, and financial burden of raising an unplanned child, and requesting damages connected to the pregnancy and childbirth and the costs of rearing and educating the child. On defendant’s motion, the court dismissed plaintiff’s complaint for failure to state a claim. The court determined that, because plaintiff had delivered a healthy child, she suffered no legally cognizable injury. We reverse and remand. [...]

To state a claim sounding in negligence upon which relief may be granted, a complaint must identify (1) a legal duty the defendant owes to the plaintiff, (2) the defendant’s breach of that duty, and (3) an injury to the plaintiff that is (4) proximately caused by the defendant’s breach. Lininger, 764 P.2d at 1205 (citing W. Prosser & W. Keeton, The Law of Torts 164-65 (5th ed. 1984)). The distinction between an ordinary negligence claim and a medical negligence claim is that, in the latter, the duty is breached when a physician’s treatment falls below the applicable standard of care. [...]

Here, the allegations of plaintiff ’s complaint, taken as true, set forth a medical malpractice claim based on the failure of her doctor to prevent the birth of an unwanted child. Although presented for the first time in a Colorado appellate court, this is a recognized claim for relief. [...]

Similarly, here, plaintiff has stated a valid claim for negligent failure to terminate her pregnancy, and the allegations in the complaint, taken as true, would entitle plaintiff to relief. Specifically, the complaint included allegations that, as a result of giving birth, plaintiff suffered economic and noneconomic damages, including medical expenses and pain and suffering associated with labor, delivery, and subsequent medical complications from the birth. These are consequential damages to which, if proved, plaintiff would be entitled. See Chaffee v. Seslar, 786 N.E.2d 705, 708 (Ind. 2003) (collecting cases) (recoverable damages may include pregnancy and childbearing expenses).

Children’s Rights Create Confusion Over the Role of Parent

In UN on March 9, 2009 at 10:46 am

ufilogo“At every stage of life, there is no greater resource and refuge for a child than the love of a parent. Time and time again, studies have found and affirmed that the nurture and love of parents plays a crucial role in positively shaping the future of their children.”
parentalrights.org

The rights of parents to raise and protect their children have been a long standing tradition around the world and in American history. That right is now being threatened! An international attitude of preferring the state over the parent is becoming more pervasive and alarming as more and more activists in the international community seek to transform parental rights into parental responsibilities and then assume it is the right of government to enforce those responsibilities over parent’s wishes. This concept has manifested itself into an international treaty called the Convention of the Rights of the Child (CRC).

Regardless of how well intentioned government may be, it can never replace the love and nurture of a parent in the life of a child.

What Are Children’s Rights?

Almost all jurisdictions recognize basic rights for children. Children have a right to have food, shelter, receive education, etc. Legal rights also include the right not to be physically, sexually or emotionally abused. These rights are afforded to all human beings regardless of age. And, no one would deny them.

The concern arises when “moral theory” becomes binding law directed by an international treaty. The United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC) was adopted at the UN in 1989. All but two member nations have ratified the treaty – one being the United States.

The CRC is a treaty that mandates a broad range of rights to children, based on the right to have their “best interests” be “a primary consideration” in every aspect of life; the ‘inherent right to life’ (Article 6), and the right of a child “who is capable of forming his or her own views … to express these views freely in all matters affecting the child” (Article 12) (United Nations 1989).

What the treaty does not recognize is the difference between basic human rights of a child and the philosophical or moral duties of parents. Children do not have the cognitive skills to determine what is in their “best interest”; societies and governments have left that role to the family…until now.

The End of Parental Rights and National Sovereignty in the US?

In the U.S. the U.N. Convention on the Rights of the Child, is one vote away from ratification. If the treaty is ratified, and all signs are it will be, the U.N., with the support of the Obama Administration and the liberal U.S. Congress, will turn the fundamental unit of society – the family, into government regulated child care.

U.N. treaties are overseen by appointed U.N. commissions that take precedence over national and state law. Imagine the U.S. being ruled by international law designed and implemented by non-elected foreign delegates with no possibility of redress!

Commission on the Status of Women: A Battle Against Families

Monday, the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women – 53rd session (CSW) began. For decades, anti-family forces have been at work trying to destroy the family and society as we know it, including motherhood, fatherhood and the family.

United Families is there and poised to monitor the status and suggest changes to the CSW “Agreed Outcome” Document as it makes it way through the process. So far, every indication leads us to believe that the 53rd CSW and the “Agreed Outcome” Document is a ruse for pushing the ratification of two treaties, abortion on demand, and homosexual rights.

The CRC and CEDAW (The Convention on Elimination of all forms of Discrimination Against Women) are highlighted throughout the Document as key to achieving human rights for women without regard to the rights of parents, nations, cultures and religious beliefs. The initial draft Document includes language that:

  • “Urges Governments, in cooperation with the United Nations system to take the following actions: … b. Ratify without reservations, the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women and the Convention on the Rights of the Child, including the Optional Protocols thereto, and the concluding comments of the Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women and the Committee on the Rights of the Child.

The Consequences of the CRC

Michael Farris, president of ParentalRights.org, chairman of the Home School Legal Defense Association and chancellor of Patrick Henry College has been quoted as saying that the U.N. Convention on the Rights of the Child, or CRC, will allow the government to review every major decision a parent makes to decide whether it is in the child’s best interest. Of course, a “child’s best interest” is in context of the individual child, not within the family unit.

The CRC treaty creates very specific rights for every child, including social, religious, cultural, economic, etc. Some of these rights are well-intentioned. For instance, the treaty calls on governments to protect the child from sexual abuse and child slavery. It recognizes that parents or legal guardians “have primary responsibility for the upbringing and development of the child,” but in the end parents’ decisions can be trumped by government on behalf of “the child’s best interest”; whatever that means.

Possible Consequences to Ratification of the CRC include:

  • Every major decision regarding your child will be overseen by your local Child Protective Service Agency through government social workers.
  • Parents who require their child to go to church, do certain chores, eat certain foods, tend to younger siblings, etc. can be reported to government authorities by their rebellious children.
  • Children will choose what religion they will join and if and when they will attend services.
  • Family leisure activities and strictness of chores will be determined by government.
  • Nations will be required to spend more on child welfare than on national defense.
  • Religious schools and home schooling may be forced to close down.
  • Parents will be mandated to keep their children in all sex education classes.
  • Children will have the right to all reproductive health services, including abortions, without parental knowledge or consent.

The result of such a law has a real possibility of causing mass confusion on the part of families; children being raised without boundaries and parents will parent with fear of reprisal. Child abuse and neglect will no doubt escalate. Orphanages will re-emerge to meet the demand for child placements and children will be removed from their homes in record numbers. An already overburdened and failing child welfare system will create a generation of children with mental health problems and juvenile delinquency.

Families are the foundation of society. We must not allow the integrity of the family and parents to be destroyed by senseless government intervention and international laws and norms.

What you Can Do to Stop CRC

Join United Families as we continue our fight to preserve a future for the family.
1. Call your Congressmen and Senators and tell them we do not want the CRC ratified.
2. Email the US representative to the UN Commission of the Status of Women and head of the US delegation(put in subject line attention: Meryl Frank) and tell her we do not want language in the outcome document that mandates the ratification of the CRC or CDAW.

Do it today! Our children and the future of society depend on it.

Congressman to introduce FOCA ‘sooner rather than later,’ spokesman says

In Abortion on March 7, 2009 at 7:41 am

ufilogoCNA reports:

A spokesman for Congressman Jerrold Nadler (D-NY) has said that the Freedom of Choice Act is among the congressman’s priorities and will be introduced “sooner rather than later,” according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

The Freedom of Choice Act (FOCA) is intended to enshrine abortion rights into federal law, protecting abortion in the event the Supreme Court overturns its ban on restrictive state abortion laws. The proposal has drawn intense Catholic opposition, with Catholic bishops worried the bill could threaten Catholic hospitals’ freedom to refuse to cooperate with or perform abortions.

A prior version of FOCA defined abortion as a “fundamental right” that no government can “deny” or “interfere with.”

Critics have claimed that concern about FOCA is overblown, noting the bill has not even been introduced for the present Congressional session. They declare FOCA’s chances of passing Congress to be slim.

However, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch quotes Ilan Kayatsky, a spokesman for Rep. Nadler, who said the legislation is “among the congressman’s priorities. We expect to reintroduce it sooner rather than later.”

Kayatsky said he expects FOCA’s other original sponsor, Sen. Barbara Boxer (D-Calif.), to introduce the bill in the U.S. Senate.

“We expect it to be more or less the same bill with some minor tweaks,” Kayatsky told the Post-Dispatch.

As U.S. Senator from Illinois, Barack Obama was a co-sponsor of FOCA. In 2007 during his campaign for the Democratic presidential nomination, he had promised a gathering of members of the Planned Parenthood Action Fund that he would sign FOCA as one of his first acts in office.

Have You Been Keeping Up With UFI At The U.N. This Week?

In UN on March 6, 2009 at 11:06 pm

UFI at the UNOn 21 June 1946, the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) was established as a full-fledged United Nations Commission dedicated to ensuring women’s equality and to promoting women’s rights. Its mandate was to “prepare recommendations and reports to the Economic and Social Council on promoting women’s rights in political, economic, civil, social and educational fields” and to make recommendations “on urgent problems requiring immediate attention in the field of women’s rights.”

Throughout its history, the Commission on the Status of Women has brought many critical issues to the forefront and has been the catalyst for much good for women and girls around the world. Unfortunately, the liberal, anti-family viewpoints that are now pervasive at the UN have shaped the workings of CSW and threaten to destroy the traditional family. The documents and policy recommendations that are being produced and adopted at CSW contain language that promotes abortion, promiscuity among young girls and gay rights. The language and policy recommendations also indentify the family as a place that promotes dangerous stereotyping of gender roles.

United Families International (UFI) began attending CSW to monitor the documents that were being produced and adopted by this Commission and offer support to delegates and missions that shared our views. Over the years UFI has played an increasingly important role as a strong voice in favor of the family as the fundamental unit of society. At this time, UFI is part of a coalition that lobbies on behalf of the pro-family position. The UFI team will travel to CSW equipped with resources that can help bolster the position of like-minded individuals engaged in negotiations. The resources, information and moral support offered to the pro-family negotiators is incredibly helpful and gives them the strength they need to stand against the rising tide of anti-family sentiment at CSW.

The 2009 Commission on the Status of Women will take place from March 2-13. As we wish to participate with our supporters, UFI has created a special blog for the CSW weeks. This blog will post daily updates from the various UFI representatives who will be inside the UN during the 2 week long session. Check this blog often for a unique look inside the United Nations and for special insight as to why we should all be concerned with the happenings of the UN. CLICK HERE FOR THE CSW BLOG.

Gary Bauer: Obama and Abortion – Actions Speak Louder Than Words

In Abortion on March 2, 2009 at 4:07 pm

ufilogoDuring last year’s campaign, candidate Obama repeatedly insisted that he was not “pro-abortion.” The statement was made to assuage the concerns of many voters who were understandably suspicious. As president, his short record demonstrates a starkly different reality.

Over the weekend, news broke that President Obama would appoint Kansas Governor Kathleen Sebelius as Secretary of Health and Human Services, a key position that deals with many issues important to health care and the pro-life, pro-family agenda. Sebelius is radically pro-abortion. In fact, as governor, she has protected late-term abortionist George Tiller by repeatedly vetoing legislation aimed at strengthening enforcement of pro-life laws in Kansas. News also broke late last week that the Obama Administration had taken the first steps toward repealing conscious clause protections for medical personnel and hospitals. Sen. Tom Coburn (R-OK), an obstetrician by profession, said he would go to jail before he was forced by the government to perform an abortion. And this comes on the heels of Obama ordering the use of taxpayer money to subsidize abortions worldwide.

Once again, Barack Obama is proving that he lied when he said he wasn’t “pro-abortion,” but pro-choice and wanted to reduce the number of abortions. How will he reduce abortions by subsidizing them, which he ordered in his first week in office? If Obama was troubled by abortion, he wouldn’t be subsidizing it with your money. If he repeals conscious protections for doctors, nurses and hospitals, then the logical outcome of that policy will be to make criminals out of pro-life medical professional like Dr. Tom Coburn if they refuse to perform or promote something that they believe is taking human life. That is using the power of big government to take away choices from those who care deeply about preserving life and forcing them to take life. That is pro-abortion.

Twice in our nation’s history the Supreme Court has declared that some human beings had no rights we were obligated to respect. I have no doubt that our nation’s first black president recognizes the injustice of Dred Scott, the Supreme Court decision that said slaves were property and possessed no rights we were obligated to respect. It is my prayer that our nation’s first black president will come to see that the same injustice is inherent in Roe v. Wade, which declared that unborn children were property of their mothers with no rights we were obligated to respect.

United Families Utah: The “Unborn Child Pain Prevention Act”

In Abortion on March 2, 2009 at 10:12 am

ufilogoDear Friends,

Because we believe that every stage of human life from the moment of conception to natural death is entitled to protection under the law, we ask for your support of House Bill 222, the “Unborn Child Pain Prevention Act”.

This bill would require a Utah physician performing an abortion to inform a woman more than 20 weeks along that the fetus may feel pain, and offer her an anesthetic or analgesic to alleviate the fetus’ pain before the abortion is performed. Helping a woman make a more informed decision could affect both her life and the life of her unborn child forever!

Please contact your Senator and ask them to VOTE IN FAVOR of HB222, the “Unborn Child Pain Prevention Act” bill.

Talking Points:

  • Utah is not breaking new legal ground with this bill. Several other states have similar laws (Arkansas, Georgia, Louisiana, Minnesota, and Oklahoma). In addition, abortion counseling materials in Alaska, South Dakota and Texas mention fetal pain.
  • Georgia Governor Sonny Perdue stated, “The Woman’s Right to Know is a common-sense approach to a sensitive issue. It gives us the proper respect and value for all life”.
  • The Oklahoma law (in addition to offering fetal pain information) also gives the woman “the option of seeing a sonogram of her fetus prior to undergoing an abortion.”
  • The Louisiana law requires a brochure be given to the mother explaining, “…Anesthesia is routinely administered to unborn children who are 20 weeks’ gestational age or older who undergo prenatal surgery.”
  • Renowned pediatrician Dr. “Sunny” Anand reported to the US District Court in California, “Between weeks 20 and 30, an unborn child has more pain receptors per square inch than at any other time, before or after birth, with only a very thin layer of skin for protection.”
  • Noted Canadian physician Dr. Will Johnston stated, “Measuring pain response in the fetus is not easy. They can’t self-report, just as babies can’t. But by every measure possible—facial grimace, withdrawal, release of stress hormones, change in pulse rate, breathing, & blood pressure—they behave as we would. And as Dr. Anand has said, ‘In the absence of absolute proof we should give the fetus the benefit of the doubt if we are going to call ourselves compassionate and humane’.”
  • Utah offers a sedative drug to condemned inmates before they are put to death. We should do at least the same for an unborn child.

Thank you so much,

Laura Bunker

CPAC 2009 was a great experience.  At a time when the conservative movement was feeling “down and out,” the conference was the perfect remedy to unite and recharge the movement.  CPAC was the place of several speeches and meetings, some of the “MUST SEE” speeches include: Tim Pawlenty, Mitt Romney, Rick Santorum, and Mike Huckabee.

These two weren’t bad either, check them out:

UFI at CPAC: February 27 Update

In Meet UFI on February 27, 2009 at 10:06 pm

ufilogoFor the second day in a row, the 2009 edition of CPAC focused the conversation on the economy. Barack Obama’s plan to save the economy was discussed and many conservative alternatives to the president’s plan were offered. Rep. Jason Chaffetz from Utah submitted to the conference that the United States cannot continue to run the country on a credit card. Former Governor Mitt Romney and other business minds floated the idea of cutting all taxes in half, while eliminating the capital gains tax for the middle class. The economy aside, the family was mentioned by several speakers.

Dr. Larry Eastland, a man who has held several positions from White House staffer to statistical analyst to author and U.S. Marine, shared that of all the jobs he has had, the job of grandfather has been his favorite.  Dr. Eastland spoke of the importance of his family in his life and in his success.  He also spoke of the need to preserve freedoms, while holding individuals accountable for their actions.

Rep. Ron Paul, a medical doctor who has delivered over 4,000 babies spoke on abortion.  Rep. Paul, who is pro-life, stated that the decision of abortion should be a state decision, not  a federal one. He said that state legislatures should have the power to pass their own abortion legislation and that if the courts were needed, the State Supreme Court, not the U.S. Supreme Court should make the ruling.

Former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney delivered one of the better speeches of the day. In the speech, Gov. Romney denounced liberal activist judges who seek to legislate from the bench. He spoke of the disregard for democracy as non-elected judges re-write the constitution. Gov. Romney pleaded with conservatives everywhere to stand up for their values as several important principles come under fire.

UFI added several signatures for the U.N. Petition to Protect Life, bringing the total number of signatures gathered at CPAC to just under 400.

David W. Ogden, Another Anti-Family Obama Appointment

In The Family on February 20, 2009 at 9:56 am

ufilogoPresident Barrack Obama is at it again. This time, instead of appointing someone who evades paying taxes, his nominee for Deputy Attorney General, David W. Ogden evades moral judgment.

Ogden, a former top aide to Attorney General Janet Reno from the Clinton era, has worked tirelessly to undermine the heart and soul of the family. Ogden has litigated on behalf of anti-life powerhouse Planned Parenthood and top pornography giants, Penthouse and Playboy; supporting the exploitation of women and children in the process. With his inherent anti-family background, it is imperative that we try to stop the Obama nomination train from coming down the track.

Deputy Attorney General Influences Laws and Policy

Taken directly from the U.S. Department of Justice’s website, the Deputy Attorney General holds a vast amount of power and authority:

“The Deputy Attorney General advises and assists the Attorney General in formulating and implementing Departmental policies and programs and in providing overall supervision and direction to all organizational units of the Department. The Deputy Attorney General is authorized to exercise all the power and authority of the Attorney General, except where such power or authority is prohibited by law from delegation or has been delegated to another official. In the absence of the Attorney General, the Deputy Attorney General acts as the Attorney General.”

Being nominated to the position of second command of the Department of Justice means David W. Ogden will not only control the day-to-day operations of the agency, his influence will be felt in policy and rulemaking throughout the agency.

Through review of Ogden’s own written legal briefs, it is clear he has an agenda that opposes parental rights, favors abortion on demand, homosexual rights, and supports the pornography industry over children. Ogden also uses international law to override U.S. policies and believes strongly in a “compassionate and living” interpretation of
the U.S. constitution.

Ogden’s History of Anti-family Briefs

Abortion

  • Ogden co-authored a legal brief for the American Psychological Association arguing that parental notification was unconstitutional and limited the rights of 14-year old minors seeking an abortion.
  • Ogden wrote the brief for Planned Parenthood on behalf of the American Psychological Association contesting a woman’s right to know policy including the negative effects of abortion and a 24-hour waiting period. His arguments included statements that women who receive abortions have “minimal” emotional and psychological effects and that “potential psychological consequences may result from bearing a raising a child…”

Homosexuality

  • Ogden wrote an amicus brief for the American Psychological Association, the American Psychiatric Association and the National Association of Social Workers in the landmark Lawrence v. Texas lawsuit in where he declared that “homosexuality is a normal form of human sexuality” and defended “safe sex” education that teaches grade school children about anal and oral sex in the Bowers v. Hartwick case.

Pornography

  • Ogden was council for 15 library directors that opposed the Children’s Internet Protection Act of 2000. He adamantly contended that Congress was subverting the role of librarians by limiting access to all “information”. Further he represented Playboy Enterprises several times over the years always in favor of access to pornography as a constitutional right.

International Law Over U.S. Law

  • Ogden assails the juvenile death penalty law in the Simmons brief using international treaty language pulled directly from the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, an international treaty snubbed by the United States Congress, stating that the international community does not support the death penalty for juveniles.

What You Can Do to Stop This Appointment

Call the U.S. Senate today at 202-224-3121.

Let the Senators know that approving a nominee who holds so little regard for families, life, and the well-being of children is in direct conflict to what our nation stands for.
Ask them not to approve a supporter of the pornography industry.
Tell them that under David Ogden’s leadership, our nation’s sovereignty is in jeopardy.
Tell the good Senators to do the right thing and stand for families by voting against David Ogden for U.S. Deputy Attorney General.

Who is Kathleen Sebelius?

In Abortion on February 20, 2009 at 8:22 am

ufilogoLifeSiteNews reports that President Obama will call Governor Kathleen Sebelius, of Kansas, to be the new head to the Health and Human Services Department.

The article states, “While House officials say President Barack Obama will name pro-abortion Kansas Gov. Kathleen Sebelius, who has been criticized for refusing to limit late-term abortions, as the Secretary of the Health and Human Services Department.

Once official, her selection would add to Obama’s growing pro-abortion record as president. Obama advisors notified the media late Wednesday that the president has settled on Sebelius as his top choice for the position, though her has not made his decision official.

The New York Times indicates the White House has not finished vetting Sebelius for the post and officials were unsure whether the process would be complete in time for her to be nominated next week.”

Of Gov. Sebelius’ abortion record, The Family Research Council said this: “Sebelius has been endorsed by Planned Parenthood and they have conducted fundraising activity on her behalf.

“Reviewing the record of Gov. Sebelius when she served in the Kansas House of Representatives, it is difficult to find a single instance, either in a procedural or substantive vote, where she acted in a manner that would afford unborn children the maximum protection. In the 1980s and 1990s then- Representative Sebelius voted to weaken or eliminate even such modest measures as parental notification, waiting periods and informed consent.
As governor, she twice has vetoed bills attempting to protect the health and safety of women by more tightly regulating abortion clinics.”

In April 2007, Sebelius hosted a private reception for infamous abortion doctor George Tiller and his staff at the governor’s mansion.

Vetoed the Comprehensive Abortion Reform Act as unconstitutional because it would allow court orders to be written to help prevent second and third term abortions.”

Abortion: African-Americans in the Crosshairs

In Abortion on February 19, 2009 at 12:48 pm

ufilogoLifeSiteNews: Campaign Life Coalition (CLC), the political arm of Canada’s pro-life movement, has called on US President Barack Obama not to preside over the greatest slaughter of African Americans in history via abortion.  CLC President Jim Hughes noted that Obama, “the first black President” has a unique opportunity to “help save the lives of 4000 African American babies who die by abortion every day in the United States.”

“Every day Mr. President, people with your ethnic background die in astounding numbers,” said Mr. Hughes.  “Abortion is the number one killer of African Americans in the U.S.”

Prior to his election, Obama told Americans he wanted abortion to be rare.  However, immediately after his inauguration, he signed an executive order to revoke the Mexico City Policy and finance the promotion and facilitation of abortion in developing nations. A Gallup Poll published on February 2, 2009 found that 58 % of Americans disapprove of using their tax dollars to pay for abortion in third world countries.

“Thus,” said Mr. Hughes, “U.S. financed abortion is targeting more blacks than ever before.”  The CLC President concluded, “By your election you have at least symbolically brought an end to racism against blacks in the United States. We pray that you will have a change of heart and end the black genocide by abortion ravaging your country and the developing world.”

The Family Research Council continues:

February is Black History Month, and we are reminded of the many African-Americans who have made remarkable contributions to our great country. Sadly, I am reminded also of the huge number of African-American babies aborted every day in the United States snuffing out enormous future potential from this community. Adding insult to injury, evidence has surfaced over the last few months concerning anti-African-American attitudes in the abortion industry.

It has long been known-but largely unreported–that Margaret Sanger (the founder of Planned Parenthood) advocated population control and birth prevention among the “unfit” from the beginning of her public work. As early as 1915, Sanger’s first handbook entitled,What Every Boy and Girl Should Know, discussed the vicious cycle of ignorance breeding poverty and poverty breeding ignorance. Sanger’s solution to this problem was to prevent the birth of children who would not have an inheritance of health or intelligence and whose parents could not provide for them. This philosophy resulted in the creation of Sanger’s Negro Project in 1939-a program aimed at restricting reproduction among the African-American population.

Abortion is the leading cause of death in the African-American community, and Planned Parenthood has had significant impact on the astronomical decline in the birth rate of this group of people. According to Alveda King, niece of Martin Luther King, Jr., abortion is the primary agenda of groups like Planned Parenthood in the African-American communities. They also offer birth control and some health services, but the emphasis is on abortion for these particular parents. The organization operates a disproportionately high number of facilities in metropolitan areas with high African-American populations. Since 1973 abortion has taken the lives of about 14 million African-American babies, nearly 1450 every day in this country. Approximately 35% of all abortions in the U.S. are performed on African-American women, while they represent only 13% of the female population of the country.

12-year-old Stuns Pro-Choice Advocates

ufilogoFom LifeSiteNews:

12-year-old “Lia” of Toronto has become a star at her school and on Youtube with her five-minute pro-life speech, crafted for a school competition.  Despite discouragement and outright opposition, Lia’s presentation was so well done that she reportedly won the contest she was told she would be disqualified from, due to the “controversial” message of her speech.

Lia’s mother says that the topic was of her own choosing, and that she was determined not to back down, even after teachers told her it was “too mature” and “too controversial.”

“She was also told that if she went ahead with that topic, she would not be allowed to continue on in the speech competition,” Lia’s mother wrote in the email to the Moral Outcry blog.  “Initially, I tried helping her find other topics to speak on, but, in the end, she was adamant. She just felt she wanted to continue with the topic of abortion. So she forfeited her chance to compete in order to speak on something she was passionate about.”

At the schoolwide competition, the mom said one pro-choice teacher on the judge’s panel “didn’t even want to hear” the speech, and stepped down from the panel before Lia began.  After the speech, which Lia’s family said was well-received by both students and teachers, the judges initially told Lia she had indeed been disqualified.  But controversy among the judges eventually led to a reversal, and Lia’s family learned the next day that the panel agreed the girl deserved to win the competition.

ufilogoSpanish Families Defy Mandatory Homosexual Indoctrination in New Video

Spanish families who are resisting their government’s mandatory homosexualist indoctrination program have made a video expressing their defiance.  ”We’re not giving in” says one mother. “We’re not going to enter the classes,” say two teenagers.  “We’re going to continue fighting … for our freedom and the freedom of all,” say two groups of families.

The video has appeared in the wake of a recent decision by the Spanish Supreme Court, which has not been formally announced yet, but which purportedly confirms that the government may compel students to take the course, which is entitled “Education for Citizenship and Human Rights.”

Although the course is billed as a type of civics instruction, it has been criticized for promoting secularist values strongly opposed to Christianity, including homosexualist ideology.

Tiny Fetal Models Cause Uproar in Dutch Media and Parliament

The model of an unborn child carried in the annual March for Life in Amsterdam has caused a firestorm in Holland.  A photo of the tiny fetal model was pictured on the front page of the Dutch Christian newspaper “Het Nederlands Dagblad” in December after the march. The front-page coverage garnered other media attention, television interviews and even angry reactions in the House of Representatives of the Dutch government.

The two inch long model represents a fetus at ten weeks of actual length and weight. “At four weeks the heart of the unborn beats; the model shows that it is a child with hands, feet and a nose even able to bring its finger to its mouth” according to the Dutch pro-life group Cry for Life.

Pro-Abortion Marie Stopes Eager for American Funds to Promote Abortion in Kenya

The leader of the Kenyan division of Marie Stopes, one of the worlds largest abortion providers, has told an AP reporter that he is eager to receive American funds now that President Obama has rescinded the Mexico City Policy.

The Mexico City Policy is a Reagan-era directive that prohibits pro-abortion overseas organizations from receiving American taxpayer dollars.  Obama repealed the policy three days after his inauguration, making hundreds of millions in foreign aid money available to such groups.

Thanks to the policy, abortion facilities that would have made abortion available to Kenyan women were forced to close, and contraception became less available, according to Marie Stops Kenya.  Now groups like Marie Stopes Kenya, who were “limping along” on European aid, are lining up to apply for American aid.

Planned Parenthood of Arizona Unapologetic for Sexual Abuse Cover-Up

In Abortion on February 11, 2009 at 11:02 am

ufilogoLOS ANGELES, February 11, 2009 — The student-led nonprofit, Live Action, has provided the full, unedited footage from a recent investigation of a Tucson Planned Parenthood clinic to the offices of the Arizona Attorney General and the Pima County Attorney. The tapes show Planned Parenthood covering up a reported case of sexual abuse of a 15-year-old girl, and were made public last week on the Live Action’s website, www.liveaction.org.

In the footage, a Tucson Planned Parenthood counselor tells a Live Action investigator, posing as a pregnant 15-year-old, how to hide her sexual relationship with a 27-year-old man. The counselor, identified in the video as “Araceli,” cautions the girl not to bring her reported 27-year-old “boyfriend” to the judicial hearing required to obtain an abortion without the consent of her parents.

Even while promising an “internal review,” Planned Parenthood of Arizona has offered no public apology nor acknowledged any wrongdoing.

Past investigations of Planned Parenthood by Live Action have yielded alarming results. Last December, Live Action released similar videos revealing sexual abuse cover-ups at Planned Parenthood clinics in Indiana, prompting state officials to initiate investigations into practices at Planned Parenthood of Indiana. Facing a public scandal, Planned Parenthood fired an employee in Bloomington and soon after suspended another in Indianapolis.

Lila Rose, a 20-year-old undergraduate at UCLA and president of Live Action, asks Arizona state authorities to follow the lead of Indiana prosecutors.

Rose states, “Planned Parenthood’s repeated claims of ‘internal review’ are woefully insufficient, especially since this organization has a record of violating state laws that protect young girls. Arizona authorities must thoroughly investigate the illicit behavior at Planned Parenthood clinics.” She adds, “We must not forget that young girls are at serious risk. Planned Parenthood’s disregard for mandatory reporting laws is prolonging sexual relationships between victimized minors and predatory adult males.”

Live Action has also launched an interactive online map that displays recorded cases of violations at Planned Parenthood clinics across the nation. The interactive map can be viewed at liveaction.org/violations.

The Feminist Movement Hurts Families!

In The Family on February 11, 2009 at 9:56 am

ufilogoThe feminist movement has done more damage to the family than any other cultural movement in recent memory. Because of the feminist movement, we have legalized and subsidized abortions all over the world. Because of the feminist movement, mothers have been encouraged to leave their children to be raised by “a village”. Because of the feminist movement, men have lost their sense of identity and masculinity. Because of the feminist movement, fathers have left their homes and families. Because of the feminist movement, men have sought companionship with other men; and women have sought it with other women. Because of the feminist movement, religious beliefs have been questioned as “outdated” and “unlawful”.

Each year United Families International joins with their pro-family partners at the United Nations for two weeks for the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW). This event is where the radical feminist leaders seek to create a document which will help them further their cause.

This year the focus of the Commission will be on HIV/AIDS and its impact on women. Don’t be fooled though. They will attempt to suggest that abortions need to be available on demand in order to fight HIV/AIDS. They will attempt to say that prostitution should be legalized so that proper medical care and safeguard can be given to women who choose this career. They will attempt to say that the idea of “Gender” is not biological but sociological and that women should not be forced into one gender or another. They will attempt to say that children should not be forced upon women but that children should be raised by others so that women can pursue their dreams.

Their message will be that a “genderless society” is what people all over the world deserve. Their message will be that gender is what is holding everyone back. Their message will be that choosing your gender should be a human right.

In the Phillipines this week they are arguing this very topic. The Phillipines Senate is voting on a bill that includes language such as, “Gender refers to the physiologico-social differentiated roles, characteristics, and expectations attributed by nature and culture to women and men.” and “No one shall invoke religious beliefs or customary norms as a means of evading compliance with this Act.”

Defenders of the family criticize the bill because they say it has been drafted by members of the radical feminist organization CEDAW Watch Philippines, several of whose members have been affiliated with the CEDAW committee and the UN Development Fund for Women, also known as UNIFEM.

These are the people we find at the United Nations during the Commission on the Status of Women. These are the women who seek to change the world as we now know it. These are the women who have already taken away many of the safeguards which were used to protect the family.

This is a very important time for us. Obama’s new UN Ambassador will be there to provide support to these women.

However, if you could walk the halls of the United Nations during those two weeks, you will see a handful of women who have a different mission. Their mission is to protect and defend families, parental rights, sanctity of life and religious liberty. You would see a group of men and women who believe in the family and are willing to do all they can to prevent the others from achieving their goals.

We have been successful in the past. We hope to be successful this year as well. Watch for our reports. Read our blogs and get our updates on Twitter. And if you can, donate now to support our efforts to protect your family.

Pro-Life Petition Continues To Add Names

In Abortion on February 6, 2009 at 7:08 pm

On December 10, 2008 a Pro-Life coalition including United Families International gathered at the UN to present a Pro-Life petition.  The reason for the petition was two fold:

  1. To celebrate the 60th Anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights
  2. In response to a Pro-Abortion petition presented by Planned Parenthood and Marie Stopes International

The Pro-Life petition contained over 340,000 names gathered over a 60 day period, while the opposition petition claimed 651 names in nearly a year of work.  Due to the relatively short amount of time that the Pro-Life petition was available, United Families International and the Pro-Life coalition have decided to keep the petition open until September 2009 when it will be re-presented to the UN.  We invite all who believe in the sanctity of life to add their names to the International Petition to Protect Life.

The petition requests that all member nations and states interpret the UNDHR to mean that:

The right to life, liberty and security is for every person; that each child born or unborn, has the right to birth and a full, natural life. That a child has the right to a mother and a father, of full age, within the bonds of marriage defined as between a man and a woman.  And, that the parents have the right to raise and educate their children without any limitation due to race, religion, culture or nationality.

CLICK HERE to add your name to the petition and join Pro-Lifers around the globe in protecting life.

From Smart Girls Politics: A Profile in Conservatism: Beverly Rice, President of United Families International

In Meet UFI on February 4, 2009 at 12:51 pm

ufilogoSmart Girls Politics (SGP) was formed in the aftermath of the 2008 US Presidential Elections as a mechanism to join like-minded conservatives together in several unique ways.  Recently, SGP interviewed UFI President, Beverly Rice.

Beverly Rice is the President of United Families International. In addition to the following interview, she has also provided a video addressed to the members of Smart Girl Politics, SGP. You can find the video here.

SGP: What is United Families International, UFI, and why was it started?

BR: United Families International was started thirty years ago in response to the pro-ERA forces. When the backers of the Equal Rights Amendment were not successful in getting the amendment ratified, they turned their focus to the United Nations with the thought that they would have better luck there. UFI leaders testified before Congress on the ERA and then began working at the UN to combat the anti-family voices there.

SGP: What are the primary issues that UFI currently stands for or against?

United Families International works on five issues which are the basic tenets of our orgniazation. They are: Traditional Marriage, Sanctity of Life, Parental Rights, Religious Liberty and National Sovereignty. These are the same tenets which are fought against us by the anti-family forces at the UN, in Congress, in State Legislatures and in governing bodies around the world.

SGP: What issue poses the single greatest threat to families under the new administration?

BR: We feel that the greatest threat to the family that the Obama administration brings is the repeal of the Defense of Marriage Act. If this is repealed, then all the marriage amendments and statutes that have been enacted by state and local governments will have no validity. Without this protection we feel that marriage will be undermined, religious liberty will be weakened, and parental rights will be diminished. The agenda of the radical gay movement is to take away many of the rights that currently protect families.

SGP: What are your organizations fears if the new administration loosens the controls on all forms of abortion?

BR: The problem with the administration loosening the controls on all forms of abortion is that is will have world-wide repercussions. While abortion is legal here in the US , there are many countries across the globe where it is not legal. These countries have been able to withstand the pressure of many organizations and countries to legalize abortion because of the support they have enjoyed from the US these past 8 years. However, with the new administration, that support will vanish and many countries will feel they have no choice but to embrace the culture of abortion.

Additionally, here in the US , doctors will be forced to perform abortions regardless of their religious beliefs and parents will lose the right to be informed when their child is seeking an abortion and finally, abortions will be allowed through the full pregnancy term. People will become desensitized to the destruction of life in the unborn.

SGP: United Families International is against same-sex marriage. However, does the organization support civil unions? Why or Why not?

BR: We are opposed to anything that causes damage to the family. There is a movement throughout the world to redefine “family”. We support the definition of the “natural family”. Social science research shows that children do best in families that have a father and a mother. One of the problems with supporting civil unions is that it is an attempt to redefine what a family is. When civil unions are accepted then other changes to family life begin to be accepted. Soon people are saying that any two people who live together, love each other and are committed to each other should be considered a family unit. It is a slippery slope and the opposition understands this better than our side does. Whenever society accepts counterfeits to the natural family, they then find themselves giving additional credence to the idea that family can mean many things.

SGP: UFI is an advocate for family issues at the United Nations. What do you believe is the biggest challenge families face from United Nation members and policies?

BR: The biggest challenge we face at the United Nations is the attempt to reinterpret the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. This document, which was adopted by the UN sixty years ago is an amazing document. In this document the countries of the United Nations agreed that the family is the fundamental unit of society; that marriage between a man and a woman should be protected; that motherhood and childhood should be protected; that parents have the right to raise and educate their children; and that all people have the right to practice their religious beliefs. It is an astounding document in its breadth and depth of addressing the human rights of families.

The forces at the UN would like to have that document reinterpreted to fit the times of today. They suggest that abortion, sexual orientation and gender identity should be human rights. They would like to have it be a criminal act to restrict anyone from enjoying these rights as human rights. If they are successful in persuading the UN countries to accept this reinterpretation then we will find that the protection that families currently enjoy will be severely curtailed.

SGP: What do you believe is the leading cause of the decline of the American Family today?

BR:I believe that many people are simply not educated on the issues. Many people are not aware of what is happening – not only in our own country – but also in countries and governing bodies around the world to destroy the family. There is an agenda out there that seeks to establish a genderless, parentless society. It will be a society where the state will have say over what children learn and believe. It is a society that wants to free all women to be able to work outside the home unencumbered with the responsibilities of rearing children. It is a society that seeks to curtail the old, tired verbiage of the religious organizations, in favor of new verbiage that talks about the secular nature of our world. It is a society where families, as we know them today, do not exist but have been replaced with varying forms of relationships that meet the physical needs of the adults involved.

There is an urgent need for people who believe in families to become educated on the issues and join with others to fight the creation of this society.

SGP: What can members of SGP do to support your organization?

BR: Members of SGP are welcome to visit our website, sign up for our weekly emails and learn all they can about the issues. We are currently in the process of setting up leadership in all 50 states and abroad. We are looking for people who are interested in helping to lead the efforts in their states. We would love to hear from anyone who might be interested in helping with this effort.

Most importantly, we want everyone to become educated on the issues affecting today’s families. Societies are only as strong as the families within those societies. United Families International is dedicated to helping protect and defend strong families.

The World Congress of Families

In The Family on February 3, 2009 at 7:07 pm

ufilogoEvery afternoon the streets of Amsterdam are filled with bicycles. Atop the bicycles are mothers and fathers bringing their children home from school. Mothers ride with a child on the back, one riding on the front and a baby closely nestled in a carrier next to her heart. Fathers, too, are seen carefully guiding their bicycles through the narrow streets in order to protect their precious cargo.

In a place where prostitution, drug use and same-sex marriage has all been legalized, parents are still working to preserve the one thing that will save their country – families. It is in this place that the next World Congress of Families (WCF) will be held in August. The Congress will provide the families of the Netherlands, and Europe as a whole, a place to hear world-renowned speakers talk of ways to strengthen their families. It will be a place where parents and children can attend classes to educate themselves on how to be proactive in living traditional values.

The World Congress of Families was instituted as a way for pro-family organizations around the world to unite together to demonstrate to the world that families everywhere want to make a stand. Despite the strident voices of the anti-family movement, evidence abounds that families are not giving up. The WCF is an opportunity for families to gather and show their support for the values they hold dear: traditional marriage, motherhood, parental rights, sanctity of life, and religious liberty. Regardless of cultural and political differences, organizations and families that support these values find that the World Congress of Families gives them an opportunity to band together. By working together, much will be accomplished in the fight to protect and defend families.

United Families International was a part of the planning team for WCF V last week. We worked with other leaders from pro-family organizations around the world to design a Congress where families can come to be uplifted, strengthened, and motivated to continue working to protect families. We were thrilled with the way the Local Organizing Committee in Amsterdam has chosen to focus the theme on how modern families can continue to live traditional values. The theme for the Congress is: Family: More Than the Sum of its Parts.

We endorse the focus of the Congress and hope that we can count on your support to help us make this WCF a sterling example of what pro-family organizations have to offer the families of the world. We would love to have you attend the Congress. If you are unable to attend, please consider making a donation to United Families International that will be used to help us support this very worthwhile endeavor.

HISTORY OF THE WORLD CONGRESS OF FAMILIES

“By bringing the world’s leading family voices to one table, WCF is the catalyst that helps direct the discussion and find solutions related to the natural family.”
- Beverly Rice, President of United Families International

United Families International is not alone in its work to secure a future for the family. Since our inception in 1978, we have worked with national and international colleagues and coalitions from around the world, educating, promoting and advancing our cause. The World Congress of Families (WCF), founded in 1996, is an additional way for United Families International to link up with our pro-family brothers and sisters from differing cultures, ethnic backgrounds, social and national communities.

The World Congress of Families was founded by Dr. Allan Carlson, president of The Howard Center For Family, Religion and Society with the purpose of promoting the natural family as the fundamental social unit of a healthy society. Since that time United Families International has been a partner in the work of WCF for the benefit it provides to all involved, and its message of hope.

Hope to the families of the world is the ultimate benefit of our involvement. Hope is what Dr. Richard G. Wilkins, founder of United Families International’s Defend Marriage Program and long time advisor, brought to Geneva when he led in the organization of WCF II.

Hope is what United Families International former Board member, Craig A. Cardon gave to those present in Mexico City when he spoke on “The Family A Source of Untold Wealth”.

Hope was all around when Carol Soelberg, President of United Families during WCF IV received a standing ovation in Warsaw for her presentation on “Homemakers Have the Ultimate Careers”.

United Families knows that families can and do bring hope to a world where the family and other traditional values are continually threatened. World Congress of Families is a safe haven where a unified voice for the family can gather and together find ways to reduce the negative effects of a failing society.

WCF focuses its work towards those who value the natural family as the standard; and who are willing to participate in the effort of promoting the family and its valuable assets around the world.

More importantly, WCF draws in families from across the globe and provides the information and support needed for the home-front battle.

WCF draws its work from some of the best and the brightest pro-family organizations in the world who by working together – are unified in our efforts.

World Congress of Families Declaration States:

The natural family is the fundamental social unit, inscribed in human nature, and centered on the voluntary union of a man and a woman in the lifelong covenant of marriage. The natural family is defined by marriage, procreation and, in some cultures, adoption. Free, secure and stable families that welcome children are necessary for healthy society. The society that abandons the natural family as the norm is destined for chaos and suffering. The loving family reaches out in love and service to their communities and those in need. All social and cultural institutions should respect and uphold the rights and responsibilities of the family.

Each World Congress of Families conference has its own theme and focus. New policy direction and insight is gleaned through planning meetings held in the interim. As the cultural war against the traditional family continues to strengthen, United Families International and WCF are dedicated to monitoring the opposition and researching new pro-family policy prospects emerging at each WCF conference:

HIGHLIGHTS OF WORLD CONGRESS OF FAMILIES CONFERENCES

WCF I

In 1997, World Congress of Families met for the first time in Prague, The Czech Republic. It was there that the Prague 1997 Declaration was adopted by the World Congress and presented to world leaders.

WCF II

In 1999, World Congress of Families met in Geneva, Switzerland under the leadership of distinguished law professor Richard G. Wilkins, and in conjunction with the world’s great religious leaders, where a common definition of the “natural family” was proclaimed.

WCF III

In 2004, World Congress III was hosted by Red Familia, and Family and Society in Mexico City. It was here that United Families International board member, Craig A. Cardon spoke and UN Ambassador to Commission of the Status of Women Ellen Saurbrey attended in support of families and marriage. Action items were created and emphasis was put on fighting for marriage between a man and a woman.

WCF IV

In May of 2007, WCF met in Warsaw to support Poland’s fight for the family in Europe. Discussions included the real threat of under-population related to the demographic challenges of the 21st century and celebrating large families as a source of renewal and progress. Carol Soelberg, mother of 13 received a standing ovation from hundreds who crowded into the room to hear her words of love and support to the mothers of the world.

WCF V (coming this year)

World Congress of Families V will be held at the Amsterdam RAI Convention Centre, August 10-12, 2009. The theme is “Family: More Than the Sum of the Parts.”  Beverly Rice, United Families International President, will be a speaker at the event.

Our message of hope as we journey around the world protecting the very existence of society’s best effort – the family, cannot be advanced without you! Please join in our efforts as we continue to partner with WCF and other pro-family coalition members.

Undercover Video Shows Tucson Planned Parenthood Ignores Sexual Abuse of 15-Year-Old Girl

In Abortion on February 3, 2009 at 8:20 am

ufilogoTUCSON, AZ, Feb. 3 – New hidden-camera footage from Tucson, AZ, implicates a third Planned Parenthood clinic in a multi-state child abuse scandal. In the video, UCLA student Lila Rose and her friend Jackie Stollar enter a Tucson Planned Parenthood clinic where Rose tells the nurse that Stollar, posing as a 15-year-old, is pregnant by her 27-year-old boyfriend. The nurse disregards the age difference and even cautions Stollar not to bring her “boyfriend” before the judicial hearing required in Arizona to waive parental consent for an abortion. This negligence is punishable under Arizona law.

“Is he not a minor?” the Planned Parenthood nurse, who identifies herself as Araceli, asks. When Rose says, “He’s 27,” the nurse urges the girls not to bring him to the hearing: “I wouldn’t take him with me, no. I mean: don’t take him.”

The video is the third to be released in a national undercover probe called the “Mona Lisa Project.” The project, conducted by the student-led California nonprofit Live Action, records on video Planned Parenthood employees as they respond to statutory rape. Rather than reporting the rape—as the law requires—Planned Parenthood clinics hide the identity of the statutory rapist and offer secret abortions.

“These videos demonstrate that Planned Parenthood, the nation’s largest abortion provider, is entrenched in an organization-wide policy of circumventing state law and covering up the sexual abuse of young girls,” said Live Action’s president, Lila Rose.

In the past two months, the Mona Lisa Project has exposed similar cases at two Planned Parenthood clinics in Indiana. In response, both clinics either suspended or fired employees, and state prosecutors launched investigations into Planned Parenthood of Indiana.

Today, Arizona Attorney General Terry Goddard is scheduled to deliver the keynote address at an event sponsored by Planned Parenthood. Rose urges Arizona prosecutors to follow the lead of Indiana state authorities and investigate the full extent of Planned Parenthood’s sexual abuse cover-up.

This is not the first time Planned Parenthood of Arizona has failed to report sexual abuse. In 2002, an Arizona judge found the abortion provider negligent for failing to report the sexual abuse of a 13-year-old girl by her 23-year-old foster brother, who brought her to a Phoenix-area clinic for an abortion in 1998. After Planned Parenthood kept silent about the abuse, the sexual relationship continued and led to a second abortion six months later.

“Our footage gives the Arizona public and law enforcement a rare window into Planned Parenthood’s ruthless abortion-first ideology,” Rose stated. “With abortion as their first and only solution for the abuse victim, Planned Parenthood assists sexual predators by violating the very Arizona state laws that protect children.”

Rose adds, “Planned Parenthood is not above the law. They must cooperate with Arizona state authorities to reveal the full extent of their lawbreaking. The victims that Planned Parenthood has turned a blind eye to deserve nothing less.”

The new video can be seen on Live Action’s website, http://liveaction.org/monalisa/tucson/.

Justice Department Nominees Worry Pro-Family Movement

In Abortion, Same-Sex Marriage on February 2, 2009 at 12:55 pm

ufilogoCNA Reports:

Confirmation hearings for President Barack Obama’s Department of Justice nominees are reportedly proceeding so quickly that Republicans and outside groups are unable to make meaningful criticisms of their intense support for abortion rights and other moral issues. One critic said the nominations portend the most “Culture of Death” justice department in American history.

“We are on the brink of having the most Culture of Death, anti-family Justice Department ever,” Leonard Leo, former Co-Chairman of the Republican National Committee Catholic Outreach and Chairman of Students for Life of America, told CNA in an e-mail.

The first controversial Obama nominee is David Ogden, whose confirmation hearing for Deputy Attorney General is scheduled for next week, less than one month after his nomination. In an amicus brief for the 1992 Planned Parenthood v. Casey decision which reaffirmed Roe v. Wade’s mandating of permissive abortion laws, Ogden argued that abortion “rarely causes or exacerbates psychological or emotional problems.”

“The few women who do experience negative psychological responses after abortion appear to be those with preexisting emotional problems,” he continued.

He argued that evidence shows abortion is more likely to make women “experience feelings of relief and happiness” and claimed childbirth and childrearing or adoption may pose “concomitant (if not greater) risks or adverse psychological effects” compared to the effects of abortion.

Thomas Perelli, the nominee for Associate Attorney General, is the second person pro-life and pro-family advocates are concerned about. Perelli is best known for representing the husband of Terri Schiavo in his effort to withdraw life-sustaining treatment from the severely injured woman.

President Obama has also chosen Dawn Johnson to head the Office of Legal Counsel. Johnson raises red flags for pro-lifers because she is a former counsel to the pro-abortion rights group NARAL. The Office of Legal Counsel provides the government with opinions about the constitutionality of proposed governmental acts.

The nominee for Solictor General, Elena Kagan, is reportedly a lesbian who strongly opposed the Solomon Amendment, which denies federal grants to institutions of higher education which forbid military recruitment or the Reserve Officer Training Corps from campus.

“A Deputy Attorney General who signed a brief in Casey dismissing the psychological harm caused by abortion. An Associate Attorney General who supported withdrawing Terry Schiavo’s life-sustaining treatment. An Assistant Attorney General who was counsel to NARAL. And a Solicitor General who has actively supported homosexual rights, particularly in regard to banning military recruiters on campus,” Leo summarized.

Latin Americans Don’t Want President Obama’s “Aid”

In Abortion on January 29, 2009 at 7:22 pm

The following is a press release sent out by Alianza Latinoamericana para la Familia (Latin American Alliance for the Family, ALAFA) in response to President Obama’s recent action involving the “Mexico City Policy.”

Latin Americans Don’t Want President Obama’s “Aid”

On January 23rd, U.S. President Barack Obama signed an executive order overturning the policy that prohibited US government funding of foreign organizations which promote abortion in less-developed countries.  As that news began to reach them, Latin American leaders began to speak out against the decision.

Disturbed with President Obama’s undoing of the “Mexico City Policy” which prohibited US funding for groups trying to promote abortion and change pro-life laws in foreign countries, the president of the Caracas-based Latin American Alliance for the Family (ALAFA), Christine Vollmer, commented, “This is a horrible way for President Obama to begin to relate with the United States’ neighbors to the South.  Instead of a positive message of wanting to work to better conditions for every Latin American, President Obama has announced his willingness to fund the enemies of the People of Latin America whose laws generally are very respectful of the right of life before birth.”

Congresswoman Martha Lorena de Casco of Honduras expressed “deep regret and sorrow” that “one of President Obama’s first decisions is to revoke the Mexico City policy.  I interpret this action as a promotion of abortion and a threat to the national legislation of my country.”

Senator Liliana Negre de Alonso, Vicepresident of Argentina’s Senate, and President of the World Action of Parliamentarians and Political Leaders for Life, rejected the Obama action: “We can’t say we defend human rights if we don’t defend the first human right, the Right to Life from conception to natural death.  To use public funds to finance groups that promote abortion is NOT respecting the First Human Right, Life.”

Julia Regina de Cardenal, of the El Salvadoran organization, “Yes to Life” commented, “Our country has total protection in its Constitution and laws for the right to life from the moment of conception.  And our “Yes to Life” organization works on a daily basis to provide practical help in a loving and life-enhancing way to poor women who have difficult pregnancies.  Ours is the ideal situation: Protective legislation and practical, life-enhancing help for people who need it.  The US government should follow our example; we shouldn’t be pressured to repeat their tragic, anti-life experience!”

Abortion: The Mexico City Policy

In Abortion on January 23, 2009 at 4:10 pm

ufilogoThe Mexico City Policy:

The Mexico City Policy, also known as the Mexico City Gag Rule and the Global Gag Rule, is a United States government policy which requires all non-governmental organizations (NGOs) that receive federal funding to refrain from performing or promoting abortion services in other countries. The policy has become something of a political flashpoint in the abortion debate, with Republican administrations adopting it and Democratic administrations rescinding it.

Obama signs order reversing abortion-funds policy (AP):

President Barack Obama on Friday quietly ended the Bush administration’s ban on giving federal money to international groups that perform abortions or provide information on the option. Liberal groups welcomed the decision, while abortion rights foes criticized the president.

Known as the “Mexico City policy,” the ban has been reinstated and then reversed by Republican and Democratic presidents since Ronald Reagan established it in 1984. Democrat Bill Clinton ended the ban in 1993, but Republican George W. Bush re-instituted it in 2001 as one of his first acts in office.

White House spokesman, Bill Burton, said Obama signed an executive order on the ban, without coverage by the media, late Friday afternoon. That was in contrast to the midday signings with fanfare ofexecutive orders on other subjects earlier in the week.

The Bush policy had banned U.S. taxpayer money, usually in the form of Agency for International Development funds, from going to international family planning groups that either offer abortions or provide information, counseling or referrals about abortion. The rule also had prohibited federal funding for groups that lobby to legalize abortion or promote it as a family planning method.

Both Obama and Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton, who will oversee foreign aid, had promised to do away with the rule during the presidential campaign. Clinton visited the U.S. Agency for International Development on Friday but made no mention of the step.

Gary Bauer added:

There are reports buzzing in Washington that President Obama will move today or very soon lift the ban on federal funding of abortion overseas, a pro-life policy instituted by President Ronald Reagan in 1984 known as the Mexico City Policy. In a time of great economic anxiety and surging budget deficits, is forcing American taxpayers to subsidize abortion really such a high priority for the new administration or the best use of our resources? And I can’t help but be perplexed and disappointed by the irony of extending rights to terrorists while committing American tax dollars to the destruction of innocent life.

Gary Bauer: Celebrating Life

In Abortion on January 22, 2009 at 3:32 pm

ufilogoA new crowd is in Washington, D.C., today – hundreds of thousands of pro-life marchers who gather here every January to mark the anniversary of Roe v. Wade. That Supreme Court decision in 1973 gave us abortion on demand and has resulted in a destruction of innocent human life (45 million unborn babies) that is almost impossible to fully comprehend.

A year ago, this national tragedy looked close to being overturned. After President Bush named two conservative Supreme Court justices, Alito and Roberts, most analysts concluded that the Court was just one justice away from overturning Roe. But now we have a pro-abortion president who has made it clear that his Supreme Court appointments will vote to continue the carnage.

Last week, my church, Immanuel Bible Church in Northern Virginia, sent an open letter written by its pastor, Dr. Ron Jones, to the new president urging him to rethink his position on the sanctity of life. I want to share a portion of that letter with you. It reads in part:

“I pray that you will reconsider your views on this moral issue. I raise my voice on behalf of the voiceless, pleading with you to take the lead in building an America where all of our children, whatever their race or family income, are welcomed into the world, protected by the law and have a seat at the table with the rest of the American family.

“These precious unborn children have been deprived of life without due process of law. More than 3,300 abortions per day, or 138 per hour, happen in clear violation of the Constitution and the second paragraph of the Declaration of Independence, which makes it plain that our liberty comes straight from God and that our first right is the sacred right to life. Furthermore, think of what those parents have missed because of abortion – a baby’s smile, a child’s first steps. Think of what the world has missed – a gifted teacher, a doting father, a dedicated missionary, a talented artist or entrepreneur, a future President.

“During your campaign you spoke much about hope. You inspired a nation. You have written about the audacity of hope. And yet, your past support for abortion is a hope-stealer. Abortion robs our nation of a tiny bit of tomorrow’s hope found in every unborn child.

“Specifically, it is my hope and prayer that you will reconsider your support for the Freedom of Choice Act (FOCA), even though you promised Planned Parenthood that signing the FOCA is “the first thing I’d do as President.” FOCA is by far the most radical piece of abortion legislation ever introduced into the Congress. My concerns with the bill are many, but chiefly they are:

• According to pro-choice advocates, FOCA would overturn the ban on partial-birth abortion, again allowing this barbaric procedure described as “near infanticide” by pro-choice senator Daniel Patrick Moynihan.

• FOCA may invalidate scores of pro-life laws passed by dozens of states.

• According to the pro-choice National Organization for Women, FOCA would eliminate existing laws against taxpayer-funded abortions.

“The Freedom of Choice Act is inconsistent with the Christian ethic of compassion for the least among us. King David’s heartfelt lyrics in Psalm 139 remind us that God is the author of life: ‘You created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb.’

“It is my sincere hope that you will join me in a celebration of God’s gift of life, and resist those who would allow another generation of Americans to disappear.”

I hope President Obama reads the letter. Over 150 years ago, the Supreme Court made another horrible decision in the Dred Scott case. That case concluded that a black slave was mere property, the equivalent of a horse, and must be returned to his owner. The decision was evil and nearly destroyed our nation.

Roe is the progeny of Dred Scott. Roe v. Wade declared that our unborn children have no rights we are bound to respect. I believe we will someday look back at Roe and see it for what it is – a rejection of our nation’s highest ideal – that liberty is a gift from God and that each of us has a right to life.

As my pastor wrote, every life destroyed by abortion “robs our nation of a tiny bit of tomorrow’s hope.” Our friends at the Fidelis Center have produced an outstanding video that very effectively emphasizes the point. You can watch it at www.catholicvote.com. It is my prayer that our nation’s first black president, who undoubtedly recognizes the injustice of Dred Scott, will someday soon come to appreciate that the same injustice is inherent in Roe v. Wade.

Gary Bauer: White House “Extreme Makeover”

In The Family on January 21, 2009 at 4:25 pm

ufilogoIf you visited the White House website yesterday morning, you would have been introduced to a defense of the right to life, the need for lower taxes and the sanctity of traditional marriage. But within hours, as power changed from a president of one party to a president of another, all that was gone. By mid-afternoon the White House website had undergone an “extreme makeover,” with the extreme agenda of the new administration front and center. Here are just a few examples:

Abortion: “he [President Obama] has been a consistent champion of reproductive choice [abortion on demand] and will make preserving women’s rights under Roe v. Wade a priority in his Administration.”

Homosexual rights: “President Obama and Vice President Biden will strengthen federal hate crimes legislation… President Obama supports full civil unions that give same-sex couples legal rights and privileges equal to those of married couples. Obama also believes we need to repeal the Defense of Marriage Act. …President Obama believes that we must ensure adoption rights for all couples and individuals, regardless of their sexual orientation.”

• On taxes and the economy, he is promising to hike tax rates on successful families and small businesses back to Clinton-era levels, raise payroll taxes, again raise the minimum wage and then index it for inflation.

Of course, changes to the White House website by the new administration were to be expected. But the radical changes in policy outlined there today underscore the consequences of elections past and future, as well the challenges ahead for those who cherish our time-honored traditional values, which do not change with the winds of political fortunes.

No Room for Families at Obama Table

In The Family on January 21, 2009 at 12:45 pm

ufilogoExpectations from the left are at an all-time high. The new Obama administration, although promising to be bi-partisan, has sullied great favor with those who would stomp on the rights of the family for the right to abortion, sexual orientation and the like. Virtually all of his transition team members come from the abortion-rights side of the ledger where their policies have already begun to come to fruition. What is considered by our opposition as the most “progressive administration in recent memory” is nothing more than a nightmare come to reality by those fighting for the family, parental rights, religious liberty and life.

There is a strong possibility that within a few short months the United States of America will join hands with the European Union and Canada where liberal policy at home and at the United Nations is the norm.

Let’s take a look at what legislation and policies will most likely be introduced and passed this year:

RATIFICATION OF UN TREATIES: Both treaties have been in place for over 20 years and have the signature of a US President. They must be ratified by the US Congress to take effect. If these treaties are ratified, which appears likely with the new Congress and under the Obama administration, all state and federal law will be superseded by UN international law and overseen by UN appointed Boards.

1.CEDAW (Convention on the Elimination of all forms of Discrimination Against Women)

(United Families has researched CEDAW in the past. Click here to read more.)

2. CRC (Convention on the Rights of the Child)

PASSAGE OF RADICAL ABORTION RIGHTS LAW: FOCA – Freedom of Choice Act

REPEAL OF PROTECTION OF MARRIAGE: DOMA – Defense of Marriage Act

PASSAGE OF SPECIAL RIGHTS FOR LESBIAN, BISEXUAL, GAY, AND TRANSGENDERED (LBGT): ENDA – Employer Discrimination Act

REVERSAL OF THE BUSH EXECUTIVE ORDER THAT WILL FUND EMBRYONIC STEM CELL RESEARCH.

APPOINTMENT OF LIBERAL JUDGES TO THE SUPREME COURT AND ALL FEDERAL COURTS.

With the domination of liberals in both Houses of Congress, pro-family legislators will find it very difficult to stymie the efforts of this radical agenda.

Almost as importantly, Obama’s leadership picks are under heavy scrutiny by pro-family coalitions, including his new United Nations Ambassador. Dr. Susan E. Rice, former assistant secretary of state and ex-National Security Council member for Bill Clinton, is known as one of Obama’s most liberal appointees. As Ambassador to the UN, Rice will carry the clout needed to push through the radical agenda put on hold by eight years of Bush’s pro-family/pro-life staunch appointees.

In March of this year, the 53rd Comission on the Status of Women will be held in New York. Rice is expected to personally head up the U.S. delegation and open the flood gates of feminism. Some may not take what occurs at the UN too seriously, believing that the UN is short on policy and long on rhetoric. But, the fact is Rice together with the new Secretary of State and darling of women’s rights around the world, Hillary Clinton, know just how to use the UN system to help in promotion of their feminist agenda.

No doubt the US will join ranks with members of the EU to push through LGBT rights, including same-sex marriage, on the EU and the rest of the world through the UN process, treaties and documents. An article from the gay community outlines their agenda.

As you can see, the battle for the family is heating up. After 8 long years of relative calm…the gloves are off and the fight is even costlier. United Families International is currently preparing to send a team of policy experts to the UN Conference of the Status of Women (CSW). Join us in the battle by donating today to offset the costs of our travel.

We cannot afford to give up and cave in. Your support will allow our voice to be heard. We will not be at the table, but we can still be in the room joining in on the debate.

It Is A Solemn Day

In The Family on January 20, 2009 at 3:42 pm

ufilogoThe air is crisp and cold. Flags are waving. People are cheering. The military salutes. Another President is inaugurated. And people who care about families, marriage between a man and a woman, the sanctity of life and religious liberty stand by the side and wait with baited breath.

Is he really going to abolish all abortion restrictions?  Will he repeal the Defense of Marriage Act?  Will he appoint judges who will strip churches of their right to preach their beliefs?  Will he ask Congress to ratify the most terrifying treaty to come from the UN?

It is a solemn day when a President is inaugurated who promises to oppose the values that this country was founded on.

It is a solemn day when the strident voices of feminism at the United Nations are cheering.

It is a solemn day when those who feel the State has more say over the education of a child than the parents are giddy with enthusiasm.

It is a solemn day when those who promote the taking of the lives of unborn children are counting how many more abortions will now be able to take place.

It is a solemn day.

Those of us who have fought so hard to achieve the victories of the DOMA, Proposition 8, the defeat of the ratification CEDAW treaty, the rights of doctors to refuse abortions, and the ban on partial-birth abortions are saying, “We will not give up!” We will not allow the family to be destroyed! We will not allow our children to be raised by the State! We will not allow the gay-agenda to define the environment in which our children will be raised!

The battlefield is being readied. The forces are assembling. Choose to become engaged. Decide that you will be a part of the fight. United Families International will help you. We will be the voice of thousands around the world who want to be successful in this battle. Together we will fight for the values we hold most dear. Together we will defend families, sanctity of life, traditional marriage and religious liberty.

ufilogoU.N. Treaty Might Weaken Families

One of the issues American families could face this year is the ramifications from a treaty called the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC).

Why should passage of the CRC be of concern? It likely would have a negative impact on domestic law and practice in the United States. Article VI of our Constitution makes treaties—and remember, conventions are viewed as treaties—“the supreme law of the land.” The CRC would be treated as superior to laws in every state regarding the parent-child relationship. This would include issues regarding education, health care, family discipline, the child’s role in family decision-making, and a host of other subjects.

Two central principles of the CRC clearly are contrary to current U.S. laws related to parent-child relationships. The CRC provides that in all matters relating to children, whether private or public, or in courts, the best interests of the child shall be a primary consideration. Additionally, nations should ensure that children are capable of expressing their views freely in all matters affecting them, giving due weight to the age and maturity of the child.

This is contrary to traditional American law, which provides that absent proof of harm, courts and social workers simply do not have the authority to intervene in parent-child relationships and decision-making. The importance of this tradition and practice is that the government may not substitute its judgment for that of the parent until there is proof of harm to the child sufficient to justify governmental intervention. It is clear that in two very important areas of the parent-child relationship, religion and education, there will be potential for tremendous conflict.

EU Votes this Week to Push Same-Sex Civil Unions on all Member States

The European Parliament is set to vote this week on a resolution that will promote abortion and same-sex unions throughout the European Union. The resolution, authored by Giusto Catania, an Italian Communist MEP, calls upon EU member-states to guarantee access to “sexual and reproductive health and rights” and represents the next step in the work of European homosexualist activists.

Cameroon Tells Pro-Abortion UN Committee “Abortion is Murder”

The committee that monitors state compliance with the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW) will begin a new session in Geneva next week, but even prior to the meeting six of the eight states who will be reviewed have already been questioned on abortion. In a stinging written response to the CEDAW committee’s advance questions, Cameroon fired back that “abortion is murder.”

In article 75, the resolution, which bases its arguments on the EU’s Charter of Fundamental Rights, calls for Member States that have already recognized same-sex civil unions in law to also recognize similar unions contracted by homosexual couples in other Member States.

Mexican president warns breakdown in family values increases crime

The Sixth World Meeting of Families opened Jan. 14 with a warning from the Mexican president that a breakdown in family values is leading to increased social problems and crime.

“Many of those that die in confrontations are young people that are detached from a nuclear family, something that results in an absolute lack of values,” President Felipe Calderon told attendees while opening the five-day meeting.

The “Window of Life” is a place where mothers who do not want to or cannot provide for their children, can anonymously and safely bring newborns in order for them to be cared for and placed for adoption.

Demographic Winter: The Decline of the Human Family

In The Family on January 15, 2009 at 1:29 pm

The following is a special message from our friends at Demographic Winter.  This video has had a profound effect on everyone I have shown it to.  Please consider watching the preview of the video, and if you like it, order a copy for yourself and anyone else who you think might benefit from learning about our culture’s falling birth rates and what can be done to stop it.

Beverly Rice, President, United Families International

  • What would you do if you heard overwhelming, convincing and gripping evidence from eminent and respected scientists, scholars and public policy leaders from around the world that conclusively proves that over-population is simply not true; that the crisis the world will confront in this century, isn’t too many people but too few?
  • The truth of the matter is that what you have been told by population-control fanatics and a biased media simply is not true.
  • The truth of the matter is that we are in a headlong rush toward economic and social chaos, and if it is not stopped the consequences will be ugly and drastic for you, your children and your grandchildren.
  • The world is NOT experiencing a population explosion. In fact, our population will soon be in so rapid a decline that our entire way of life will be threatened
  • Politically-correct movements to advance destructive and seemingly un-relatedcauses such as abortion, the so-called normalization of homosexual behavior and cohabitation outside of marriage all contribute to declining birth rates.

“Demographic Winter is a timely account of a crisis we cannot ignore. The loss of confidence and the decline of faith that afflict much of the West are leaving us with empty cradles and emptier hearts. This film is a call to recover the family so that we can renew our future.”

Tony Perkins, President, Family Research Council

“Demographic Winter is a wake-up call for the pro-family movement. The worldwide fall of birthrates is one of the most pressing problems confronting humanity. Watching this DVD (and sharing it with others) is a necessary first step to finding solutions.”

Paul Weyrich, Chairman and CEO, Free Congress Research and Education Foundation

“Demographic Winter will shock most viewers. It shatters myths that most people throughout the world have unquestioningly bought into. And it will challenge viewers to look at how our individual choices impact the future of the world. The fears of global warming are little in comparison to the threat of demographic winter.”

Is “One Way” Really the Only Way?

In Same-Sex Marriage on January 13, 2009 at 7:48 pm

ufilogoIn U.S. President-elect Obama’s speech in Berlin he talked about being “a fellow citizen of the world”.  He described the burdens of global citizenship that “continue to bind us together”.  He said, “Partnership and cooperation among nations is not a choice; it is the one way, the only way to ….. advance our common humanity.”

In the European Union Parliament this week, Giusto Catania, an Italian Communist MEP, will ask the European Union member-states to approve a resolution that will guarantee access to “sexual and reproductive health and rights” (abortion) and will recognize same-sex unions equally with traditional marriage.

Another attack on the family is coming from three international homosexual rights groups.  These groups are trying to get committees at the UN to include the Yogyakarta Principles as a measure by which states could be held accountable.  These principles, originated from a conference held at Yogyakarta, Indonesia in 2006.  The meeting was attended by leading homosexual rights advocates to develop a brand of sexual rights intended to be “…a universal guide to human rights which affirm binding international legal standards with which all States must comply.”

Several states across the United States have recently had to deal with laws allowing transgender individuals the use of public restrooms.  These laws provide the right to individuals to use the restroom of their choice.  These are entitled “gender identity protection laws.”

During the battle of Proposition 8 in California, we at United Families sought to educate citizens about the impact that laws and treaties at the United Nations had on their state.  It is obvious that in an attempt to “advance our common humanity”, the citizens of the United States are being pressured to adopt the customs, ideas, and morals that a “global citizenship” brings.

At United Families International, we do not believe that what has been happening in the European Union, Indonesia, the United Nations or in many states in the U.S. represents what families all over the world want.  We believe that families would like to have leaders who felt that being a “fellow citizen of the world” would mean protection from the homosexual agenda.  We would like to have leaders who stand up for families and recognize the critical contribution that they make to society.  Without families these leaders will not have a country to represent.

President-elect Obama needs to take the stance that the only “burden” that global citizenship brings is the one that forces the traditional family to suffer the consequences of choices that will destroy the family.  We disagree with Obama when he says that “Partnership and cooperation among nations is not a choice; it is the one way, the only way…”

We believe that there is a choice.  We believe that their way is not the only way.  We believe that the only way is to fight this agenda that seeks to destroy the family.  We believe that the only choice the world has is to defend families.

At United Families International, that is what we do every day.

Pro-abortion politicians have challenged the Partial-Birth Abortion Ban, calling it unconstitutional and introducing the “Freedom of Choice Act.” This Act will go further than Roe v. Wade to enshrine abortion on demand into federal law.

The “Freedom of Choice Act will:

- Overturn the ban on partial-birth abortions
- Overturn laws that restrict taxpayer funding of abortions
- Nullify all pro-life laws on the federal and state level.
- Force doctors, nurses, hospitals, and other health-care providers to perform and pay for abortions – even if they are morally opposed to abortion.
- Insist that insurance companies pay for abortions

President Elect Barack Obama stated in a campaign address, ”The first thing I’d do as President is sign the “Freedom of Choice Act”…On this fundamental issue [abortion], I will not yield and Planned Parenthood will not yield.”

NEWS: Porn and Abortion Industries Seek Bailout

In Abortion, Pornography on January 8, 2009 at 11:50 am

ufilogoFrom CNN:

Another major American industry is asking for assistance as the global financial crisis continues: Hustler publisher Larry Flynt and Girls Gone Wild CEO Joe Francis said Wednesday they will request that Congress allocate $5 billion for a bailout of the adult entertainment industry.  “The porn industry has been hurt by the downturn like everyone else and they are going to ask for the $5 billion. Is it the most serious thing in the world? Is it going to make the lives of Americans better if it happens? It is not for them to determine,” said Owen Moogan, spokesman for Larry Flynt.

Flynt and Francis concede the industry itself is in no financial danger — DVD sales have slipped over the past year, but Web traffic has continued to grow.

But the industry leaders said the issue is a nation in need. “People are too depressed to be sexually active,” Flynt said in the statement. “This is very unhealthy as a nation. Americans can do without cars and such but they cannot do without sex.”

“With all this economic misery and people losing all that money, sex is the farthest thing from their mind. It’s time for congress to rejuvenate the sexual appetite of America. The only way they can do this is by supporting the adult industry and doing it quickly.”

From David Freddoso:

Among the many left-wing interests that have submitted wish lists to the Obama transition team is a conglomeration of 50 abortion-advocacy groups, all of whom want the U.S. taxpayer to stand and deliver.

The report is audacious in the scope of its demands, most of which would mean more money for the groups that authored it. In all, it calls for $1.5 billion for groups that engage in abortion advocacy and perform abortions. Among its demands is an expansion of funding for Title X health clinics, from $300 million to $700 million, and greater freedom in how that money is spent. Of the 4,400 such clinics in America, about 450 are run by Planned Parenthood, whose domestic and international arms are listed as co-authors of the report.

The report also calls for an increase in international “family planning” funds from $461 million to $1 billion, much of which would go to the groups that authored the report and their affiliates. And it calls for an end to the ban on using this money for abortion. The report requests $65 million for the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), whose officials were discovered in 2000 to be assisting Chinese officials in enforcing that country’s coercive population-control program.

Freedom of Speech, Freedom of Religion, Freedom of Abortion

In Abortion on January 7, 2009 at 9:42 am

ufilogoLooks like the U.S. abortion proponents are at it again. This time they have created what appears to be a new, updated version of the U.S. Bill of Rights. The Bill of Rights was carefully enacted over time and with the ratification of a super-majority of all the states. It recognizes in a legitimate way the basic rights of individual citizens and gives a guarantee that the federal government will not overstep its authority over individual citizens; giving credibility to government and protection to its citizens.

However, when congressional action sets a new precedence for the creation of a fundamental right, it is time to take note…and take action.

The United States of America defined the fundamental rights of its citizens through the state ratification process in 1791. These fundamental rights became known as the first 10 amendments to the Bill of Rights. They include: the right of religion and speech, the right to keep and bear arms, the right of private property, fair treatment of those accused of crimes, protection from unreasonable search and seizure, freedom from self-incrimination, a speedy and impartial jury trial, and representation by counsel. The federal government is also prohibited from depriving any person of life, liberty or property without due process of law. Additional rights are granted to those accused of crimes as well. Other rights followed, although the first 10 are recognized as the fundamental rights of citizens.

The Freedom of Choice Act introduced in April of 2007 creates a new fundamental right. If passed into law, this legislation will protect the right to abortion just as if ratified as an amendment to the Bill of Rights.

Practically speaking, this legislation if passed will pre-empt all state and federal law, and case law including the recent Gonzales vs. Carhart ruling that upholds the federal partial birth abortion ban. It will also supersede any and all law defining the viability of the “fetus”.

Parental notification laws will be void and taxpayers will be expected to pay for all government funded abortions, including late-term abortions.

In essence, any female of any age will be guaranteed an abortion on demand through and up to the birth of the baby.
FOCA also creates a new “right” to sue, ensuring abortion services from every hospital and health care provider no matter their religious views or right of conscience.

No other piece of legislation has the potential to force widespread abortion access to so many women than FOCA. The harmful negative effects of a coercive federal government will have the founding fathers rolling in their graves.

Email your Congressmen and US Senators today. Tell them that FOCA is anti-life, anti-family and anti-American.

US President-Elect Plans to Revoke All Anti-Abortion Laws

In Abortion on January 6, 2009 at 5:28 pm

ufilogoA new year has begun and in a short time the United States will have a new president.  As all new years bring changes, this New Year may bring devastating changes that will affect our families.

One of those devastating changes may be a new abortion law.  The Freedom of Choice Act has been introduced in Congress over and over again since 1989.  Obama has stated, ”The first thing I’d do as President is sign the Freedom of Choice Act. That’s the first thing I’d do.”

The purpose of this law is to revoke every other anti-abortion law which has been passed by state and local governments.  It seeks to make abortion a “fundamental right”.  Does this language sound familiar?  It should.  If you have been reading these emails you will recognize that this is the same agenda that is being promoted at the United Nations.  The attempts at the UN to reinterpret the Universal Declaration of Human Rights go hand-in-hand with the Freedom of Choice Act.

The agenda of the abortion activists is to make abortion a fundamental right of all women regardless of age.  It includes removing restrictions such as parental consent, and age of the woman.  It requires all doctors to perform abortions whether or not it violates their religious beliefs.  It removes barriers such as partial-birth abortion laws and requires that all hospitals, religious or not, allow abortions to be performed.

This law violates most of the tenets that United Families International stands for.  It takes away parental rights, revokes laws protecting the sanctity of life, denies individuals the right to religious liberty, and seeks to destroy families by permitting women to make choices that affect all families.

The words, Freedom and Choice are very powerful words.  Freedom is a word that evokes powerful feelings in people throughout the world.  It is a word that can bring people to the defense of country, homes and families while also bringing tears at the thought of the sacrifices made in defense of freedom.  Choice is also a powerful word.  It brings to mind the agency we have all been given by our Creator to make decisions in this life that will benefit ourselves, our families and our country.

The Freedom of Choice Act, however, is disingenuous in the use of those two words.  This Act does not bring freedom to a doctor who chooses not to perform abortions.  It does not give choice to fathers of unborn children.  It does not promote freedom for the millions of unborn children who will be sacrificed on its altar.  It destroys freedom and choice for millions of people around the world who do not support its destructive agenda.

United Families International is determined to defend the true meaning of Freedom and Choice.  We will fight this legislation by educating people around the world about its destructive consequences. We will be there in Washington to find Senators and Congressmen who will stand up for families, religious liberty, and the sanctity of life.

Those at the United Nations will be watching closely to see if they have been successful in achieving their agenda in the United States.  We do not want them to find success.  Please join us in this battle.  Help us defend Freedom and Choice.

Opinion Essay: Why Rick Warren Opposes Same-Sex Marriage

In Same-Sex Marriage on December 31, 2008 at 1:38 am

ufilogoBarack Obama’s selection to give the prayer at his upcoming inaugural continues to stir controversy. Rick Warren, author of the mega-bestsellingThe Purpose-Driven Life and pastor of a California megachurch, is controversial, because he opposes abortion rights and has campaigned to ban same-sex marriage.

Gay rights activists are particularly incensed. They insist that Obama, elected with overwhelming support from the gay community, should never have picked such a “divisive” figure. Gay rights advocates have called Warren “homophobic” and “hateful” for his support of Proposition 8, the ballot initiative that invalidated same-sex marriage in California.

**To watch and read about Rick Warren’s interview with Ann Curry, click hereUNFORTUNATELY…they don’t play the whole interview, and the place the website chose to stop the interview clearly shows their bias.**

Whenever one examines the issue of same-sex marriage, it must be done on two levels. First, the secular, civil level. And, then, the moral and religious one. In Warren’s case, focus is generally on the issue’s religious dimension, since the California pastor is…well…a pastor.

This blog post won’t get into the civil aspects of the issue. I understand some people objecting to Warren bringing his religious beliefs into the public arena. I understand that criticism, though I don’t agree with it, since a Christian has as much right to engage the public policy arena as any other citizen. But we’ll leave that aspect of the issue for another day. For now, let’s focus on the religious dimension of same-sex marriage.

It’s clear that Rick Warren has little choice on the matter of same-sex marriage, when it comes to his Christian faith. The Bible from which he preaches clearly condemns homosexuality. If Warren were to support same-sex marriage, he would be turning his back on the Bible. This is simply not something a conscientious, honest, sincere, Bible-believing evangelical can do.

David R. Stokes, a pastor himself and columnist for TownHall.com, points this out in an excellent op-ed titled “An Evangelical Bridge Too Far.” Pastor Stokes writes:

“No matter how understanding evangelicals are and how sincere some are to open a dialogue with same-sex marriage advocates and activists, there can be no real rapprochement without the willingness to change the way the Bible is read and interpreted. And that would be an evangelical bridge too far.”

Sincere, Bible-believing evangelicals don’t oppose same-sex marriage because of hate or homophobia. They object to gay marriage, because of what the Bible teaches on the subject. Pure and simple.

And while some gay rights activists will point out that earlier generations of evangelical Christians supported slavery and segregation on religious grounds, it’s clear from a straightforward reading of Scripture that racism and race-based slavery are not consistent with Christian principles.

To argue that the Bible endorses race-based slavery shows the same kind of shallow and twisted logic that says the Bible supports polygamy. The Bible clearly condemns involuntary slavery with its denunciation of stealing and covetousness as well as Jesus’ teachings on the Golden Rule. The fact that some people in the Bible practiced slavery doesn’t make slavery right. The same is true for polygamy.

In the case of homosexuality, the Bible’s moral teachings are consistent throughout. Of course, some critics of the Bible use this against Christians.

These critics argue that the harsh penalties for homosexuals in the Old Testament should prove that a literal reading of the Bible belongs in the past. These critics, among them scholars like former Anglican Bishop John Shelby Spong, say that Christianity must change and adapt to accommodate new discoveries and realities.

It’s true that the Mosaic Law contained rather harsh and punitive measures for homosexuals (as well as for rebellious teenagers, witches, etc.), but the Mosaic Law was unique and is not one-dimensional. Parts of the Mosaic Law, particularly the ceremonial aspects and the penalties assigned to certain offenses, were temporary and applicable only to the Hebrew nation.

This is particularly clear with the addition of the New Testament, which separates the Kingdom of God from the realm of Caesar and which elevates grace over law. Christians in the New Testament and post-New Testament era are not called upon to use the arm of government to enforce specific religious orthodoxy, and the penalties of sin (whatever the sin may be) are in God’s purview. It’s the role of Christians today to reach out with love and compassion, not hatred or vengeance.

And few Christians have reached out with more love and compassion than Rick Warren. He and his wife have become global leaders in the fight against AIDS and poverty. To say now that Rick Warren is homophobic or hateful, because he takes a public position against same-sex marriage is unfair and quite extreme.

I hold a strong position against polygamy. As does Warren, I’m sure. Does that mean we hate those who practice polygamy???

To disagree with someone is NOT the same as hating him or her. Disagreement – even public disagreement – is not hatred. And opposing part of the gay rights agenda doesn’t mean one is homophobic.

For crying out loud, I voted against a referendum in Ohio that would’ve allowed casino gambling in Clinton County. But I surely don’t hate people who gamble. My wife’s parents gamble – and do so in casinos. And I love and respect them.

It’s utterly outrageous to say that Rick Warren is a bigoted homophobe, because he opposes same-sex marriage. He has every right to oppose it — and to do so publicly. And his biblical convictions dictate that he oppose it!

And this is where the rubber meets the road. The choice that many (if not most) gay rights activists are giving people of faith (especially people of evangelical Christian faith) is this…

Support the gay rights agenda and, in doing so, jettison or change your religious beliefs….OR….be branded a hateful bigot!

Many evangelicals will cave to this pressure, because no one (least of all a true Christian) wants to be associated with bigotry or hate. But an honest Christian can’t simply jettison the Bible or change its meaning to suit his or her needs at the moment. The Bible is either the Word of God or it’s not. And if it is the Word of God, then it carries authority with it.

It is not for Rick Warren to decide whether the Bible is right about homosexuality. If Rick Warren is to be true to his Christian convictions and true to the Bible for what it is, then he has no choice but to support traditional marriage.

UFI: Success in 2008

In The Family on December 30, 2008 at 2:42 pm

As we come to the end of another year, we at United Families International wish to thank all of you for your support during our 30th Anniversary year!  What a year it has been!  We have been successful on many fronts thanks to your willingness to support our efforts.

We hope we can count on your support again in 2009.  It is crucial that we receive your donation before the end of the year so we can finalize our plans for 2009.  Our ability to continue this work on behalf of families throughout the world depends on you! Your donations in 2008 provided us with critical resources.  We accomplished so much because of you!

Here are a few of the highlights your support helped us achieve:

  • In March, while lobbying at the United Nations at the Commission on the Status of Women, UFI was able to work with other pro-family organizations and split the European Union in order to defeat pro-abortion language. http://unitedfamilies.org/default.asp?contentID=138
  • In April, as part of the pro-family international coalition leadership, we worked with Kosovo’s parliament leaders to craft language for their new constitution that would protect the rights of families, religion, marriage, and life. http://unitedfamilies.org/default.asp?contentID=134
  • From May through November, United Families played an important role as a integral component of the ProtectMarriage coalition in California.  Through the educational tools and speakers we provided, we were able to help secure the passage of Proposition 8.  http://unitedfamilies.org/default.asp?contentID=243
  • In May, we announced two new partners for our abstinence-based HIV/AIDS prevention program – Stay Alive.  The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and the Catholic Church, both announced that they would begin pilot programs to implement Stay Alive in Kenya and Tanzania.http://unitedfamilies.org/default.asp?contentID=131

Thanks to your support we were able to make significant inroads in the protection of families, religious liberty, and sanctity of life.  As you consider your year-end giving, please make a significant contribution to United Families so that at the end of 2009 we will have many more wonderful successes to report.

Happy New Year!

Baby Born at 23 weeks Challenges UK Abortion Laws

In Abortion on December 30, 2008 at 8:45 am

ufilogoThe UK news service, Mail Online reports the following story:

When Lexie Slater-Folksman was born at 23 weeks  -  an age at which babies can still be aborted  -  she weighed just 1lb 8oz.

She was put on a life support machine and her parents were warned their daughter might not pull through.  She was so premature her eyes hadn’t even developed properly. At a month old she underwent laser surgery on her eyes and then spent week after week on ventilator machines after she suffered collapsed lungs.

But Lexie defied the odds and gradually gained strength.

Now, six months after her birth, she weighs a healthy 8lb and has finally been allowed home, to the joy and relief of her parents, 20-year-old Sarah Slater and her fiance Richard Folksman, 25.

They say Lexie’s case proves that the abortion laws are outdated and should be changed. At 23 weeks, Lexie was born a week before the time limit for termination.

The Telegraph, another UK news outlet, continues:

Last May, two months before she was born, MPs voted for the upper time limit for abortions to remain at 24 weeks after rejecting proposals to reduce the time limit to as little as 12 weeks.

Anti abortion campaigners had argued the time limit for termination was too long saying a baby’s rights should be considered at the point it had the “chance of life”.

Her mother Miss Slater, from Wigan, Greater Manchester said, “We’re so glad to have Lexie home with us at last and it just shows how outmoded our laws on abortion are.

“Some mothers-to-be would be able to legaly terminate their pregnancy at 23 weeks – yet my Lexie is living proof babies can survive being born so prematurely.

“I never realised a baby would be so well developed at 23 weeks and they do have a chance life. My Lexie is living proof the abortion limit should be lowered.

“I’m so grateful to everyone at the hospital who helped to keep our daughter alive.”

Planned Parenthood Fears Outside Scrutiny – Chooses Closely Linked Group to Implement ‘Reform’

In Abortion on December 30, 2008 at 8:17 am

ufilogoDecember 30th, LOS ANGELES – Lila Rose, 20-year old president of Live Action, responds to a public statement made by Planned Parenthood of Indiana President Betty Cockrum in defense of her organization after investigative videos shot in Bloomington and Indianapolis clinics showed the criminal cover up of statutory rape. Rose calls for Planned Parenthood of Indiana to publicly release the number of reports Planned Parenthood of Indiana has made to Child Protective Services in conjunction with the number of minors to whom they have provided STD testing, abortion counseling, pregnancy testing, and birth control.

In an open letter to Planned Parenthood of Indiana, Rose says that comparing these two statistics will begin to give the public a more accurate picture of the extent to which Planned Parenthood fails to report adult-child sexual relationships. The letter outlines the two paths Rose believes Cockrum can choose. “Planned Parenthood of Indiana may either opt for transparency in service to the rule of law, or choose to continue in the same secrecy that has already caused deep public distrust and summoned a state investigation.”

Rose questions the abortion provider’s commitment to reform in light of new information uncovered by Live Action. Live Action revealed today that Prevent Child Abuse Indiana, the group selected by Planned Parenthood for internal reforms, has close ties with Planned Parenthood. Prevent Child Abuse of Indiana’s lead “prevention specialist,” Carol Pool, worked for Planned Parenthood of Indiana for thirteen years as an “educator” who gave sex education workshops. Planned Parenthood of Indiana’s website says, “PCAI is a great organization,” and states, “Family planning services go hand-in-hand with the prevention of child abuse.”

“For Planned Parenthood to enlist the help of its friends and former employees at PCAI in the name of reform is like a predator saying he will babysit his victim,” said Rose.

She calls the promise of “staff re-training” by Planned Parenthood a public relations ploy. “All employees in the videos expressed knowledge of their legal obligation to report the rape,” said Rose. “This is not a matter of knowing the laws. When Planned Parenthood doesn’t like a law, they break it.”

Actual cases of Planned Parenthood covering up adult-child sexual relationships have been reported in Arizona, California, Ohio, and Washington D.C.

“These incidents, and our undercover work, reveal a disturbing pattern of lawlessness,” Rose explains. “Planned Parenthood needs to release all applicable statistical data on the number of minors it treats in sexual abuse situations and the number of these cases it reports to law enforcement.”

The open letter can be found on Live Action’s website, www.liveactionfilms.org. The second investigative video, released last week, can be found at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hTxsWZz9whg

The Fight FOCA Petition

In Abortion on December 24, 2008 at 8:49 am

ufilogoIn 2004, for the first time, California Senator Barbara Boxer introduced The Freedom of Choice Act (FOCA).  To date, the Bill has not been signed in to law but if passed, it would override every piece of Pro-Life legislation that has been made on a local, state, or national level.  Sen. Boxer herself said that this radical Pro-Abortion legislation would ”supercede any law, regulation or local ordinance that impinges on a woman’s right to choose.”

Last year Barack Obama told the now famously corrupt Pro-Abortion organization, Planned Parenthood, that the first thing he would do as president of the United States is sign FOCA into law.  As the legislative and  executive branches of the U.S. government are controlled by the party that traditionally supports abortion, FOCA may be close to becoming law.

As defenders of the unborn, we must do all we can to ensure that their rights are protected.  The Pro-Life group, Americans United for Life has taken part in a project called FightFOCA.com.  FightFOCA.com is a great resource for all Americans to educate themselves on FOCA and sign the Fight FOCA Petition.  For 30 years, United Families International has been devoted to maintaining and strengthening the family as the fundamental unit of society.  We have fought on all levels of government to support the sanctity of human life, including unborn children.  We are happy to join with Americans United for Life and voice our opposition to abortion.

FOCA would eradicate state and federal laws that the majority of Americans support, such as:

  • Bans on Partial Birth Abortion
  • Requirements that women be given information about the risks of getting an abortion
  • Only licensed physicians can perform abortions
  • Parents must be informed and give consent to their minor daughter’s abortion

FOCA would erase these laws and prevent states from enacting similar protective measures in the future.

The Fight FOCA Petition:
I oppose the Freedom of Choice Act (FOCA), because:
  • FOCA is a radical attempt to enshrine abortion-on-demand into American law;
  • FOCA seeks to sweep aside existing, protective laws that I and the majority of Americans support;
  • FOCA will prevent states from enacting protective measures in the future.

The FightFOCA petition will be sent to key Members of Congress upon the re-introduction of the Freedom of Choice Act in the 111th Congress, and to President-Elect Obama.

Opinion Essay: Adoption, Abortion, and Solutions

In Abortion on December 23, 2008 at 9:59 am

ufilogoWe all probably know someone who has been adopted.  In my case, my brother, 8 months my elder is adopted.  I also have dear friends who are adopted.  I can hardly imagine my life without them.  I think about the times I have spent with them, I have participated with them in their success, and seen the things that bring them joy.  These people have made me who I am and I am ever grateful to them.  The thought that their birth mothers may have been so close to abortion and the idea that these people way not be in my life is enough to make me cringe.  I marvel at the love of these birth mothers who so unselfishly carried these precious people to full term to put them into a better situation.

My desire is that each  may come to a better understanding of the dangers of abortion, and the positive aspects of adoption.  I will discuss the effects on the aborting mother and the anguish that she passes through emotionally and physically.  I will touch on proposed methods to educate people about pregnancy and safe sex, and provide information about an organization dedicated to making the adoption process smooth.

The Center for Bio-Ethical Reform states that 52% of abortions are performed on women younger than 25 years old.  Teens account for 20% of all abortions.  To stunt the problem of teenage pregnancy parents must take responsibility for teaching their kids about sex.  Families must discuss the risks of becoming sexually active and the dangers that are associated with having multiple partners.  Our schools must also tastefully teach sex-ed and students should be informed on the topics of contraceptives.  Teens must understand the power of procreation and the problems that can arise in if this power is misused.

We must also teach the public about the dangerous reality of abortions.  Many studies have revealed some startling facts about the after effects of an abortion.  The British Medical Journal published that physically, women who have an abortion run the risk of becoming sterile, never able to have a natural child.  Those who are not sterile face a greater chance of having complications in their future pregnancies.  Many other health concerns arise after an abortion operation such as hemorrhage, convulsions, and severe infection.

Worse than the physical effects are the potential emotional damages to an aborting mother.  According to The British Journal of OBGYN, in the weeks after the abortion 50% of women admit to feelings of intense guilt and one-third regret their decision to abort.  According to studies by Dr. David Reardon, a leader in the study of post-abortion research tells that the most frequent reactions to an abortion include: depression, loss of self-esteem, self-destructive behavior, sleep disorders, memory loss, sexual dysfunction, chronic problems with relationships, dramatic personality changes, anxiety attacks, guilt and remorse, difficulty grieving, increased tendency toward violence, chronic crying, difficulty concentrating, flashbacks, loss of interest in previously enjoyed activities and people, and difficulty bonding with later children.  The most devastating findings from research say that 80% of women who have abortions later express feelings of “self-hatred” with 60% entertaining the thought of suicide with 30% of them actually attempting suicide.  These stats are depressing and hopefully they awaken us to a need for an alternative to abortion that avoids the physical and emotional damage.

One organization with the cause of helping women make the decision between adoption and abortion is LDS Family Services.  LDS Family Services is an organization run by and paid for by the LDS Church.  Although the organization is run by the church, it’s services are available to people of all faiths, religions, races, economic standing, and sexual orientation.  According to the LDS Church website, LDS Family Services is a non-profit organization that offers individual, marital, and family counseling.  Their unwed parent services include counseling, medical, and educational assistance, along with the adoption services if the parents so chose.

If a mother chooses to give her child up for adoption, LDS Family Services will guide her through the entire process.  The mother can choose the couple who will receive her child and the mother and couple may even discuss if the adoption is an open or closed adoption.  Although adoption may normally be expensive, this organization is able cut cost thanks to donations from members of the church and donations from members of the community.

This is a topic that is very real and close to me.  A lot of the happiness in my life has come from the close interactions I have had with adopted people in my life.  On the other hand, I have had the opportunity of meeting with several women who have had abortions.  I have looked into their eyes and felt their pain.  I have gained a personal knowledge of adoption and abortion and I wish that each of us could gain our own understanding so that when it comes time for us or someone we know to make a decision we will be ready.

I hope that the right to life is always respected.  I hope that when a decision is being made about an “un”expectant pregnancy all factors are taken into consideration, especially the factor of potential for both mother and child. I call to each of you who have been informed, to share these dangers of abortion and spread the good news of adoption.  In truth, LDS Family Services does not need your money, but they do need you to tell others about their many services, especially those who will benefit as they make the difficult choice as to what steps to take as they deal with an unexpected pregnancy.  As we support adoption, we support the life of a mother or an adopted individual who will come into our lives and change us for the better.

UN UPDATE: UFI Helps Gather Signatures Defending The Family

In Same-Sex Marriage on December 19, 2008 at 9:53 am

ufilogoOn December 18 Reuters reported the following UN news:

The U.N. General Assembly split over the issue of gay rights on Thursday after a European-drafted statement calling for decriminalization of homosexuality prompted an Arab-backed one opposing it.

Diplomats said a joint statement initiated by France and the Netherlands gathered 66 signatures in the 192-nation assembly after it was read out by Argentina at a plenary session. A rival statement, read out by Syria, gathered some 60.

The two statements remained open for further signatures, the diplomats said. No resolution was drafted on the issue and there was no voting, they added.

The division in the General Assembly reflected conflicting laws in the world at large. According to sponsors of the Franco-Dutch text, homosexuality is illegal in 77 countries, seven of which punish it by death.

The European Union-backed document, noting that the 60th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights was marked this month, said those rights applied equally to all people, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity.

But the opposing document said the statement “delves into matters which fall essentially within the domestic jurisdiction of states” and could lead to “the social normalization, and possibly the legitimization, of many deplorable acts including pedophilia.”

“We note with concern the attempts to create ‘new rights’ or ‘new standards,’ by misinterpreting the Universal Declaration and international treaties to include such notions that were never articulated nor agreed by the general membership,” it added.

This, it said, could “seriously jeopardize the entire international human rights framework.”

Muslim countries have for years opposed international attempts to legalize homosexuality.

U.S. officials said the United States had not signed either document. They said the broad framing of the language in the statement supporting decriminalization created conflicts with U.S. law, but gave no further details.

Last week United Families International spent the week at the UN with a Pro-Family Pro-Life coalition.  During their stay at the UN, UFI, along with the Pro-Family coalition, presented a petition to the UN General Assembly in favor of the family and the rights of the unborn.  In addition to the presentation of the petition, UFI held meetings with several UN Ambassadors that helped get signatures on the opposing document that Reuters cites.

“United Families International is proud to have been instrumental in helping garner additional support for the Pro-Family statement.  Our coalition was happy to have worked specifically with the nation of Egypt on this particular document.”  UFI President, Beverly Rice told the UFI Blog.

For the past 30 years UFI has worked at the UN to maintain and strengthen the family as the fundamental unit of society.  UFI maintains non-government organization (NGO) status with the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations (ECOSOC) and works to educate UN ambassadors and delegates on root policies affecting the family. UFI sends representatives, including experts on family issues, to UN conferences to provide legal analysis and peer-reviewed scholarly research in support of UN delegates working to preserve the family. UFI has been successful in affecting the outcome of numerous UN conference documents and in promoting respect for the family, marriage, life, religion, parents and national sovereignty.

Standing For Life

The Wall Street Journal reports today that the Bush Administration will announce new regulations Friday expanding the “right of conscience” protections for health care providers so that hospitals, doctors, nurses and other workers cannot be forced to participate in abortions or other practices that may violate their religious beliefs. We believe conscience clause protections are extraordinarily important. Whether it’s a Catholic hospital or an evangelical doctor, no one should be forced to participate in a practice they find morally reprehensible.

Regrettably, however, the Journal also reports that the Obama transition team is already laying out plans to repeal these new rules and force taxpayers to pay for abortions.

Educating Or Indoctrinating?

If you thought segregation in education was a thing of the past, think again. Barack Obama’s announced nominee for Secretary of Education, Arne Duncan, who currently heads Chicago’s public school system, was promoting segregation in the schools as recently as October. But in this case, Duncan’s issue wasn’t race but sexual orientation. At an October press conference announcing 20 new schools, Duncan unveiled plans for Chicago’s first “gay, lesbian and transgender” high school. The so-called “School for Social Justice Pride Campus” would “seek to foster a violence-free atmosphere for students who are often targeted for their sexual identities.” Shouldn’t all schools have “violence-free atmospheres”?

According to the Chicago Tribune, Duncan hailed the “gay high school” concept, saying that he expected “half of its students would be gay while the other half would be straight students with an interest in the social justice focus school officials want to foster.” When I served as Under Secretary of Education in the Reagan Administration, we did our best to keep the focus on reading, writing and arithmetic. But today our kids leave high school knowing precious little about our nation’s founding principles, basic grammar, math and science, and way too much about “social justice” and radical environmentalism.

Education has given way to indoctrination. And the fact that the head of the Chicago Public School system would be championing the cause of “sexual identity segregation” in the public schools is a sad testimony to the radicalization of education in America today and the agenda of the incoming administration. If Duncan was pushing the creation of homosexual high schools in Chicago, what will his agenda be in Washington?

AGAIN!!: Planned Parenthood Covers Up

In Abortion on December 16, 2008 at 11:56 am

ufilogoOn Dec. 3, 2008 the UFI blog reported on Live Action Film’s ‘Mona Lisa Project.’  The Mona Lisa Project is a series of hidden camera investigations, collected summer 2008, documenting the real behavior of the abortion industry across the nation. Despite a consistent pattern of lawlessness and abuse, Planned Parenthood receives over $300 million from taxpayers. The  tax-exempt “nonprofit” netted $100 million in profits last year including revenue in excess of $100 million from performing 250,000 abortions.

“The Mona Lisa Project demonstrates how quickly the abortion industry’s disrespect for unborn children becomes disregard for all humans,” Lila Rose, President of Live Action Films explained. “Planned Parenthood offers no solutions for the victim of statutory rape—they give her an abortion and a bag of condoms and send her straight back into the arms of the abuser.”

The first video of The Mona Lisa Project was released on Dec. 3 and may be viewed by clicking here.  The second Mona Lisa Project video was released today and may be viewed by clicking here.

Every Choice Has an Attached Consequence

Every Choice Has an Attached Consequence

Every choice has an attached consequence.  CHOICE => CONSEQUENCE

The choice of sexual intercourse carries an attached consequence of a high probability of a baby.  SEX => BABY

The trend for many Americans is to enjoy the “pleasure” of their choices:  robbery, murder, laziness, sex,… and do away with the consequences.  As Americans, we must stop facilitating this trend by holding ourselves and others accountable for individual choices.

choose accountability.  choose life.

Gary Bauer Reports Anti-Family News

In The Family on December 15, 2008 at 9:15 am

ufilogoNote: This News Alert was sent by Gary Bauer, click here to subscribe.

The pro-abortion lobby, led by Planned Parenthood and NARAL, have put together a 55-page “strategy memo” outlining their demands on the next administration and Congress. Unbelievably, the Obama transition team posted the document on its website, which gives us a glimpse, an early warning, of the pro-abortion movement’s plan of attack.

It is developing a broad, sweeping assault on the right to life. It is demanding the repeal of all restrictions on abortion at every level. That means repealing the federal ban on the gruesome procedure of partial-birth abortion. That means repealing state parental notification laws. It means gutting abstinence education, while providing more of your hard-earned tax dollars to pay for condoms and birth control pills in the schools and more abortions at Planned Parenthood centers. We must fight this radical anti-life, anti-parent agent!

Unfortunately, that’s not all. The militant homosexual rights movement has also compiled its list of demands. Officials at the Human Rights Campaign and the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force are saying publicly that they want hate crimes laws and special employment rights for homosexuals passed next year. We also anticipate a legislative assault in Congress against the Defense of Marriage Act and more efforts in the states to redefine marriage. Believe it or not, last week the Iowa Supreme Court heard arguments in a case seeking to force same-sex “marriage” in the American heartland. Just one month after the people of three states, including California, voted to protect the traditional meaning of marriage, the militant homosexual movement is still trying to get the courts to undo the will of the people!

Press Conference to Present Unborn Child Petition

Press Conference to Present Unborn Child Petition

Representatives of United Families International, including President Beverly Rice, arrived in New York on Monday night with a busy agenda and a list of objectives to accomplish:

1. Celebrate the 60th Anniversary of the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UNDHR) by the UN General Assembly.

2. Present the UN General Assembly with a petition containing over 340,000 names in favor of the rights of the unborn and in defense of the family.

3. Participate in meetings with several UN Ambassadors from around the world.

It was on December 10, 1948 that the UN General Assembly adopted the UNDHR.  The UNDHR’s intention was to protect the right to life, liberty and safety of all groups of people, as well as recognize the importance of societies’ most treasured unit…the family, in enabling those rights.  United Families International agrees that each individual, born or unborn has the right to life. We also agree that the family is the foundation of society.  And, that the principles set forth in The UNDHR of justice, fairness and equality means respect for life, family, cultures and religion.  And, that these rights come not from government or nations, but from a higher source and are taught by the good families of the world.

Unfortunately for the Pro-Life movement, two International Pro-Abortion groups, International Planned Parenthood Federation and Marie Stopes International, planned their own celebration of the UNDHR: A presentation of a petition that demands that the right to an abortion be given to all people around the world.  This pro-abortion petition was signed by a mere 651 individuals.

UFI, along with a Pro-Family Pro-Life coalition including the Pro-Life Federation of Poland, the Institute of Family Policy of Spain, Catholic Family and Human Rights Institute, and US-based Concerned Women for America countered the petition with their own containing the names of more than 340,000 Pro-Life supporters.

The Pro-Life Pro-Family group shared at a press conference “the petition presented today urged States to recall the original words — and understanding — of the Universal Declaration.  It was organized around six points:  the right to life (article 16); the right of men and women alone to marry and found a family (article 16); the concept of family as the fundamental unit of society (article 16); the entitlement of motherhood and childhood to special care and assistance (article 25); and the prior right of parents to educate their children (article 26).”

They went on to say that the petition, launched 60 days ago in response to another drive calling for the recognition of abortion in United Nations documents, had gathered more than 500,000 signatures from 168 countries thus far.  Some 300,000 had been added since last Friday and the goal was to have 1 million names by the convening of the next General Assembly session, at which time the petitioners would request that it take action.”

Said UFI President Beverly Rice, “the Declaration’s reference to a family’s entitlement to State protection acknowledged it as the building block of any successful society.  It also meant that Member States should support the family through policies that would protect it. United Families International stands with others in asserting that those principles remained valid and relevant, and that they should not be reinterpreted.  We will not be deterred from fighting to defend the Declaration and its original intent.”

PRESS CONFERENCE ON PRESENTATION OF ‘PETITION FOR THE UNBORN CHILD’

In Abortion on December 12, 2008 at 11:09 am

ufilogoThe Universal Declaration of Human Rights had been “sullied” by the addition of “supposed” new rights — notably the right to abortion — and United Nations treaty monitoring bodies were at the forefront in causing harm by “ordering” Governments to change their laws, Austin Ruse of the Catholic Family and Human Rights Institute said at Headquarters today.

At a press conference sponsored by the Permanent Mission of the United States, Mr. Ruse described the actions of those entities as an “assault on human rights, national sovereignty and international law”.  He was accompanied by panellists Wendy Wright of Concerned Women for America; Noelia García Ayuele of the Institute for Family Policy; Beverly Rice of United Families International; Lech Bosek of the Polish Federation of Pro-Life Groups; and Martha de Casco, a Member of Parliament from Honduras.  They were in New York to celebrate the sixtieth anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and present a petition on the rights of the unborn child.

Mr. Ruse said the petition presented today urged States to recall the original words — and understanding — of the Universal Declaration.  It was organized around six points:  the right to life (article 16); the right of men and women alone to marry and found a family (article 16); the concept of family as the fundamental unit of society (article 16); the entitlement of motherhood and childhood to special care and assistance (article 25); and the prior right of parents to educate their children (article 26).

He went on to say that the petition, launched 60 days ago in response to another drive calling for the recognition of abortion in United Nations documents, had gathered more than 500,000 signatures from 168 countries thus far.  Some 300,000 had been added since last Friday and the goal was to have 1 million names by the convening of the next General Assembly session, at which time the petitioners would request that it take action.

Taking the floor next, Ms. De Casco said article 16 of the Declaration established that men and women had a right to marry and found a family, and thus, were entitled to protection by society and the State.  As such, it was no surprise that the word family was mentioned six times throughout the Declaration.  Family based on marriage was not an “accidental social construction”; marriage and family had their own inalienable rights.  When the family was broken, serious individual issues arose which weakened the State as it had to provide for the family one way or another.  There was a need to promote family through political, socio-economic and legal measures.

Also speaking about article 16, Ms. Rice said the Declaration’s reference to a family’s entitlement to State protection acknowledged it as the building block of any successful society.  It also meant that Member States should support the family through policies that would protect it.  United Families International stood with others in asserting that those principles remained valid and relevant, and that they should not be reinterpreted.  The group would not be deterred from fighting to defend the Declaration and its original intent.

Ms. García Ayuele highlighted the importance of parents’ right to choose their children’s education, including in matters concerning human sexuality and religion, citing the example of Spain, where ore than 50,000 parents had objected to a proposal to introduce children’s citizenship as a school subject on the grounds that it would affect their moral education.

Speaking about the right to life, Mr. Bosek said the Polish people, Parliament and Supreme Court all recognized that phrases such as “everyone has the right to life” meant the unborn child could not be excluded from the scope of regulation.  Article 2 outlined that no one, for any reason — particularly birth — could be excluded from the guarantees set forth in the Declaration, and it was important to bear that language in mind.

He said the Polish Constitutional Court provided the clear position that human life should be protected from conception, as there was no scientific proof that it began any later.  Sceptics should refer to articles 1 and 2, which contained guarantees for the protection of inherent human dignity.  Indeed, unconsciousness, age and birth were irrelevant to the consideration of being human.  Many binding instruments referred to unborn human life, including the European Convention on [Human Rights and] Biomedicine, which protected human dignity before birth.  For those reasons, the Declaration could not be reinterpreted.

Speaking about the role of mothers, Ms. Wright said they formed their children’s identities in a way that influenced every other relationship, and denigrating their role created disharmony in various ways.  The Universal Declaration recognized the profound role of mothers and the innocence of childhood.  Policies that would deny the noble role of motherhood or exploit the innocence of children did so at the peril of the world community.  On the sixtieth anniversary, United Nations officials should recommit themselves to the simple truth that motherhood and childhood deserved special care.

To round out the panel, Mr. Ruse spoke on behalf of Carlo Casini, a Member of the European Parliament and President of the Italian pro-life movement, saying that the Universal Declaration’s adoption had been a sign of change that had ended an age of racism and violence.  Sixty years on, the Declaration had not been implemented in all its parts anywhere in the world.  In several countries, the law distinguished between “more” and “less” worthy lives.  The petition presented today was of utmost importance, not only to stop the pressure to substitute human rights with “anti-human” projects, but also to advance ideas for improving the Declaration.

Taking questions, Mr. Ruse said the unborn child indeed had legal status in many legal systems, including that of the United States, where it could be represented in court.  The Universal Declaration did not require the child’s protection from abortion, but it would allow for that kind of interpretation.  Some “in the system” argued that the Declaration required the right to abortion.  For example, the Committee monitoring the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights interpreted the “right to life” clause in that instrument as the right to abortion, which was wrong.  Governments should interpret the Universal Declaration, among other documents, as protecting the unborn child from abortion.

Mr. Ruse responded to a question about how many United States citizens had signed the petition, by saying he did not have the data at hand but he would be able to provide it later.

Asked how concerned the panel was about the incoming United States Administration, Ms. Wright responded that she was quite concerned about President-elect Barack Obama’s “disturbing” campaign promises.  Concerned Women for America was working to educate people about those promises, and educate Congress about the kind of “devastating effect” they would have on domestic and foreign policy.

Mr. Ruse added that he was concerned about the possibility of the United States ratifying the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women, which Mr. Obama and Vice-President-elect [Joe] Biden supported.  The Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women had reinterpreted the document to include the right to abortion, and regularly asked Governments to change their laws.  For example, Colombia’s High Court had changed its laws on the basis of the Committee’s statements.  The Catholic Family and Human Rights Institute was concerned that Mr. Obama would appoint judges and justices with a “broad” understanding of the sources they should look into when interpreting the Constitution, including those of the United Nations and European Union.

Ms. De Casco, recounting how she had come under direct pressure from State Department officials at United Nations conferences, said it was a “great worry” that United States policies affected the Organization’s programmes.  Her opinions were based on her country’s Constitution, and it was morally correct to hold the same position at the United Nations.  Latin Americans were very concerned about the incoming Administration’s views on life and abortion.

In response to a query about the petition, Mr. Ruse said it had been presented to several delegations this week and would be sent to the Secretary-General.  Next fall, it would be sent to the General Assembly.  However, attempts to reach out to the General Assembly President had been unsuccessful.

Asked about France’s pending submission to the European Union urging the decriminalization of homosexuality, Mr. Ruse said he was following the issue closely.  While 40 to 50 nations had signed on, it would not be a negotiated document and would have no force except in terms of public relations.

France had gone beyond decriminalizing homosexuality and was reading sexual orientation into all human rights instruments, which would profoundly affect marriage and adoption, he warned.  Hopefully there would be another declaration in the coming days that would make plain that it was for nation States to determine their positions on such “highly controversial” issues.  United Nations treaty bodies were monitoring something in which they had no business being involved.

Asked about the position of the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) on family planning, Mr. Ruse said it was complicit in China’s one-child policy, adding that “UNFPA is very aggressive, very ideological on the issue of abortion”.

Regarding the handling of the black market consequences of outlawing abortion, Ms. Wright said abortion was dangerous, whether legal or not.  Powerful changes had occurred in the pro-life movement when women had come forward to admit their regret over having had an abortion.  Making it legal only gave it an appearance of legitimacy.  Among the worst things for women in developing countries was telling them that they should undergo an invasive procedure that harmed those with even the best medical care.  When in crisis pregnancies, women needed to be sure they did not feel as if their only choice was to have an abortion.

Opinion Essay: Why We Must Promote A Cultire of Life

In Abortion on December 11, 2008 at 10:06 am

ufilogoThis blog post has been used with permission of the author.

I think the time has come to discuss why our nation should promote a culture of life.  It is a stance that in time has grown closer and closer to my heart.  With almost one week to go before Election Day I think it is more important than ever to discuss this issue.

Let me start with a fact that may blow your mind – A year ago I would not even think of writing the following editorial.  I was apathetic and sat on the fence between pro-choice and pro-life not wanting to stray onto either side.  For years I had read advocate after advocate from both sides bicker and battle with each other. I saw abortion as a divisive issue.  With a major political influence being Neal Boortz who could blame me?  Then stepped in Governor Mike Huckabee.

No one on any side had been able to communicate in a way that made sense and was compassionate towards the issue until Governor Mike Huckabee came onto the national scene.  Granted he did not win me over right away.  It took a lot of praying and thinking but the process began while Mike was speaking to the throng gathered in Ames at the Iowa Straw Poll.  Fresh in our minds that day were the trapped miners in Utah.

While making his case, Governor Huckabee cited those poor miners.  Also important was that not only did Governor Huckabee say that we must protect the unborn and the sanctity of human life but he took his case one step further and said that we should honor, cherish, and nurture all human life from “conception until death.”  As with his stance on other issues it was definitely Vertical and unifying compared to the zealous views of other people and politicians who have sparked violence between factions at times.

With that said I can now say that I am definitely pro-life.  Governor Huckabee made the view seem compassionate and quite logical.  Going back to his speech in Ames, “Why should we care about lost boy scouts or the trapped miners in Utah if we don’t protect the unborn and the sanctity of human life from conception until death?”I think I must have heard that same message about a few hundred times while watching him speak on the stump on TV and in video.  Each time he said it, he made more and more sense.  Then I began to look into my heart and look back at the very unique story that is my life when it hit me like the broad side of a barn.

I was born physically challenged with many birth defects.  The most prominent of these is my lack of sight.  I am legally blind.  Yes, I can see some but that is with the help of the very thick glasses I wear.  Along with being legally blind I was born with a bilateral cleft lip and palate and was born without a nose (just holes where it should be).  I was tested for every disease and disorder known to man in 1982.  All the tests came out negative.  Despite that I faced long odds and a grim prognosis.  My doctors gave me six weeks tops.  If for some reason I would survive that long, they said I’d be a mere “Vegetable.”

Despite beating those odds, at two months-old, pneumonia set in and after only a few weeks home I was back in the hospital.  Then things went from bad to worse and my heart began to fail.  My skin started turning blue turning blue and I was rushed into intensive care.  On Thanksgiving of 1982 I underwent emergency surgery and through the skill of my doctors, the love of my family, and the blessings from our Lord, Jesus Christ, the operation was a success.  To this very day, 26 years later, I continue to beat the long odds that were placed before me

After looking back at my life story I realized that I have beaten the odds because I was blessed to have parents who chose to love and care for me no matter what.  This can be attested to the culture of life we have had in this Nation.  However it is sad, but true that there are some in this country that would have left me to die.

I can’t imagine to be a source of knowledge of the complexities of the miracle of child birth.  I’m a man, not a woman.  I understand that there are emotions and feelings that I cannot comprehend.  In addition, I realize that there are some women who would like the right to choose.  I’m not heartless.  Has it ever occurred to anyone out there that when a fetus is aborted a woman may be exercising her right to choose but when she does so there is a life that stands in the balance who has no choice in the matter?

While others may disagree the facts are plain as day to me.  Life begins at conception.  God has a plan for each life that is conceived.  Fuliflled an un-born fetus could grow up to be the next Einstein, the next President, or the next Elvis.  The unborn child could go on to find the cure for Cancer, AIDS, maybe Muscular Dystrophy.  Not allowing an unborn fetus to fulfill the plan God has laid in my eyes is murder in the worst degree.  Why?   The life held in the balance has no choice whatsoever.

There are definitely other options.  What about the couples out there that would like to raise a family but for whatever reason cannot conceive?  One of the birth defects I was “blessed” with was a pituitary dysfunction.  My body cannot produce enough testosterone.  Therefore I cannot conceive if I wanted to.  Adoption would be my only option and the process seems so convoluted and complex that it doesn’t seem worth it.  If the process was streamlined and made more simple child bearers who cannot afford their baby or don’t want a child could easily put them up for adoption for parents who do want them.

Please note that I do recognize that there are some cases where an abortion is absolutely necessary and required. That is when the life of the mother lays in the balance as well.

So why must we promote a culture of life in our Nation?  It is very simple.  It does not take a lot of effort to research the alternative.  Let’s go in the wayback machine to the 1930’s in Europe.  The Nazi culture of death led to the Holocaust.  There is a lot made of the many brutal and senseless murders of millions of Jewish people.  However I want you to know that the Nazis didn’t stop there.  Also murdered were people of other races, creeds, colors, sexual orientations, and the handicapped.

I’m not trying to say that a culture of death is going to result in a 2nd Holocaust in the same manner.  There is nothing that can compare to the tactics of the brutal Nazi’s led by Adolph Hitler.  It is meant as a lesson that we should take to heart.  A culture of life will cause people to prevent even a remote similarity from occurring.  Due to the technology today, mothers have access to many tests to get a glimpse at what their children may turn out to become right out of the womb and how healthy he/she will be.   Living in a culture of life, the chances are better that parents will continue with the process, even if the tests come out with results that are sobering.  A culture of death will result in more abortions and children being killed off without a choice once they are born with severe handicaps and birth defects.

The handicapped are born as they are for a reason.  It’s part of His plan in some way.  While, yes, my parents have questioned why I was born the way I was I have never questioned it.  My life is not easy but it is mine that was set out for me.  The same goes for the many who are handicapped and disabled.

I volunteer for a school for special needs children here in my hometown.  I am very blessed to serve the Lord, my community, and the world in this fashion.  I feel a special bond with the children because while we may be different we are alike more than we are different.  What if we had a culture of death and these little angels didn’t exist?  If fills my heart with sadness just thinking about it.

Whether you agreed with me before reading or you agree after reading my opineI urge everyone to sign Governor Huckabee’s Pro-Life petition and get as many people as you can to sign it as well.  Thanks & God bless you!

Note: This message was sent via the UFI Alert E-Mail Program.  Click here to be included in future UFI Alerts.

Tomorrow is the 60th Anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UNDHR).  As we sit comfortably in our homes throughout the world, we may wonder “Why should I care about that?  What effect does this have on me? “

Sixty years ago, after the conclusion of World War II, the world came together and recognized the atrocities that had been committed against mankind.  A world body was established, the United Nations, which wholeheartedly accepted the wording in this document as the governing principles by which all governments and people should live by.

This document stated that “the family is the natural and fundamental group unit of society and is entitled to protection by society and the State.”  It states that marriage between a man and a woman is a protected human right.  It states that freedom of religion and the opportunity to practice that religion is a human right.

Tomorrow United Families will stand with others in the pro-family coalition to announce to the world that these principles are still valid, relevant and should NOT be changed.  Tomorrow we will tell the world that despite the loud voices of the opposition, we will not be deterred in fighting to defend this document and its original intent.

Tomorrow International Planned Parenthood Federation and Marie Stopes International will also be speaking to the world.  They will be demanding that the UNDHR be interpreted to include the right to abortion.  They will say that access to abortion is a human right and the UNDHR should be interpreted as such.

Tomorrow the delegation from France will introduce a declaration at the UN General Assembly that will attempt to legitimize all homosexual activities as a fundamental human right.  They will be demanding that sexual orientation and gender identity be protected as a human right.

Tomorrow is an important day.  Tomorrow should be a celebration of the family, freedom of religion, and marriage between a man and a woman.  Tomorrow should be a declaration that 60 years ago the United Nations stood up for what is most important.  Tomorrow should be a time to remember the hope, goodwill and triumph that can come when the world stands and says that there are human rights everyone should be guaranteed.  Tomorrow we should all feel safe that our families, marriages and religions will be protected because of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

But, instead, tomorrow will just be another day on the battlefield.  Tomorrow will be another day when those who wish to destroy the family will make another attempt.  They will use deception as their weapon.  Their desire is to create a genderless society that is run by the state – void of religion, marriage and parents.

In order for the tomorrows of the future to provide hope for families around the world you must care about what happens at the United Nations! When you are going through your day tomorrow, please take a moment to consider how this document has affected your life and what might be changed if the opposing forces are successful.  Please take a moment to consider why what happens at the United Nations does matter and does impact your life.

Please stand with United Families International and make a donation today to help us as we continue the battle on behalf of you, your family, your religion, the sanctity of life and marriage between a man and a woman.

UNITED FAMILIES INTERNATIONAL TO CELEBRATE UNIVERSAL DECLARATION OF HUMAN RIGHTS, SUBMIT 300,000 NAMES TO UN IN FAVOR OF LIFE AND FAMILIES

In Abortion on December 9, 2008 at 2:33 am

ufilogoUN Headquarters, New York – Tomorrow, December 10th, on the 60th Anniversary of the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UNDHR) by the UN General Assembly, United Families International (UFI), along with a coalition of social conservative groups from around the world, will present a petition of 340,000 names requesting that all member nations and states interpret the UNDHR to mean that:

The right to life, liberty and security is for every person; that each child born or unborn, has the right to birth and a full, natural life. That a child has the right to a mother and a father, of full age, within the bonds of marriage defined as between a man and a woman.  And, that the parents have the right to raise and educate their children without any limitation due to race, religion, culture or nationality.

The petition is a response to opposition petition efforts by pro-abortion groups International Planned Parenthood Federation and Marie Stopes International that demand that the UNDHR be interpreted to include that access to abortion is a human right and the UNDHR should be interpreted as such.

“During a time when family values are under attack in nations and states across the globe, tomorrow should be a celebration of the family, freedom of religion, and marriage between a man and a woman.  Tomorrow should be a declaration that 60 years ago the United Nations stood up for what is most important.  Tomorrow we should all feel safe that life, our families, marriages and religions will be protected because of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.”  Said Beverly Rice, President of UFI, a non-profit organization that has been fighting to protect the family at the UN since 1978. “But, instead, we fear tomorrow will just be another day on the battlefield, another day when those who wish to destroy the family will make another attempt.  They will use deception as their weapon.  Their desire is to create a genderless society that is run by the state – void of religion, marriage and parents.”

UFI, along with a Pro-Family Pro-Life coalition including the Pro-Life Federation of Poland, the Institute of Family Policy of Spain, Catholic Family and Human Rights Institute, and US-based Concerned Women for America will present the petition at UN headquarters and in private meetings with Ambassadors from several UN missions.

Those who wish to join the celebration of the family as the fundamental unit of society and of the right to life may continue to sign the petition after tomorrow at unitedfamilies.org.

New Pro-Life Video from Live Action Films

In Abortion on December 3, 2008 at 10:55 am

ufilogoLive Action Films is a youth led human rights movement dedicated to the respect and protection of all human life including the unborn. We use new media and educational presentations to share the truth about life and the threats to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness posed against the born and unborn.

BLOOMINGTON, December 3 – New footage released today from an undercover camera inside an abortion clinic in Bloomington shows Planned Parenthood staff deliberately violating the state’s mandatory reporting laws for sexual abuse.

The footage shows Lila Rose, a UCLA student reporter and president of right-to-life advocacy group Live Action, posing as a 13-year-old girl. In an appointment with a Planned Parenthood nurse, Rose says she has been impregnated by a 31-year-old man, a clear case of child molestation under Indiana state law.

On tape, the nurse acknowledges her responsibility to report the incident, but assures Rose she will not. The nurse says, “I am supposed to report to Child Protective Services,” but tells Rose, “Okay, I didn’t hear the age [of the 31-year-old]. I don’t want to know the age.”

She then instructs Rose how to obtain a secret abortion by crossing state lines in order to avoid Indiana’s parental consent law. The nurse also coaches Rose to cover for the 31-year-old man by saying he is only 14. She says, “You’ve seen him around, you know he’s 14, he’s in your grade and whatever. You know what I mean.”

Rose said she and other students in Live Action recorded the video over the summer in a multi-state investigation of the abortion industry. Rose described the undercover audit, called The Mona Lisa Project, as “demonstrating the routine lawlessness of abortion providers at Planned Parenthood.” Rose noted, “Today’s video release is only a sample from many hours of similarly disturbing footage.”

Planned Parenthood, a tax-exempt nonprofit, made over $100 million in profits last year and has a billion-dollar budget, nearly a third of which comes from taxpayers through government funding.

Jackie Stollar, student president of a Live Action chapter in Oregon, accompanied Rose on the investigation. “In a repeated pattern, Planned Parenthood has violated the public trust. It should have its government funding revoked,” she said. “During an economic crisis, can the government really spare $300 million to support such an unethical organization?”

“The Mona Lisa Project demonstrates how quickly the abortion industry’s disrespect for unborn children becomes disregard for all humans,” Rose explained. “Planned Parenthood offers no solutions for the victim of statutory rape—they give her an abortion and a bag of condoms and send her straight back into the arms of the abuser.”

Opinion Essay: Adoption, Not Abortion

In Abortion on November 28, 2008 at 8:12 pm

ufilogoToday Matt, Taylor, and I had an interesting lunch discussion on the topic of abortion. It made me think about the seriousness of it and the many perspectives that people have on this sacred topic. In a debate, it is nearly impossible to come to an agreement on this subject, but this is my take on the issue.

I will first state that I believe that an abortion, at any stage of development, is taking the precious life of a human being. Those cells are a human life, they are the cells of an individual, it is the beginning of life…the beginning of a human being.

Abortion takes away the future being’s innate right to make his or her own choices on how he or she will live and who they will become. What was once an opportunity for the individual to learn, grow, love, invent, share, and explore is taken away for the selfish purposes of their irresponsible parents. Never will the aborted life be able to pass through hard times nor feel the joy as they achieve their goals, all because 2 people didn’t think it would be convenient to take responsibility for their choices. This innocent life will never be able to exercise free will on anything, all options are shut down as the parents express their greed.

While living in Paraguay, I had the opportunity to meet with many women who had had abortions. I wish each person who considers abortion could have heard what I heard. To feel the sorrow of each woman, to share in their pain was something I will never forget. One woman told me that she had a child aborted 14 years ago, and literally, ever since that moment she had been haunted by her mistake, never had I seen anyone in such sorrow as she was. She said she had thought about it every single day, that she had been kept awake innumerable nights dwelling on her choice. She expressed to me the sadness she felt when another woman would consider abortion and how she would beg each potential mother to not repeat her mistake. I had 10 or so similar occasions, and each woman was weighed down heavily for their decision to prematurely end the child’s life.

Some will say, “but Drew, sometimes it just isn’t logical to bring a life into this world. So the lady got pregnant, she can’t deal with that financially and she has her career, an abortion just makes sense.” I would hope that these people would read my blog on act utilitarianism vs. rule utilitarianism and understand that deciding to take a life based on what is economically smart is morally wrong and strips the individual of all integrity. That class of decision making unveils a shallow and corrupted set of priorities and values. What is more tragic than trading a life for money?

Adoption, not abortion is the answer. Many people who become pregnant are not fit nor prepared to support a life. If arrangements are unable to be made so that the child can grow in a healthy, loving environment, adoption is the only moral fix to the problem. It is believed that the process of adoption is a difficult and long road, this is false. Many organizations have been set-up to ease the burden. One organization is LDS Family services, this organization is run by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, but is open and eager to help women of all faiths. There exist people who value life and the opportunity we all have to make choices. There are men and women who will make all sacrifice possible so that the mother and child end up in the right place. Abortion denies these facts and fuels the idea that life is meaningless. Life does matter, choices are important. Give the child a chance, let him or her make their own decisions as to who they will become.

I recognize that in some scenarios an abortion is needed to save the life of the mother, I cannot dispute that sincere consideration must be given to abortion. Under any other circumstances I consider abortion to be a selfish reaction to an irresponsible moment. If a couple decides to have sexual relations outside the bonds of marriage, birth control should be used to keep an innocent child out of harm’s way. If an unplanned pregnancy occurs, adoption is a loving and unselfish solution and a pathway to a bright future for both mother and child.

Do You Know What Your Child is Reading?

In The Family on July 31, 2008 at 8:33 pm

You carefully monitor the types of television your children watch. You restrict the movies they attend and you are vigilant about the types of reading material they bring into the home. So have you covered all of the bases? If you haven’t read your children’s text books you may be in for a surprise.

It is possible; no it is probable, that some of the textbooks your children are using contain topics and references that you will find inappropriate. Even if you live in an area with a strong conservative or religious base the textbook choices available to your public school district many times contain questionable material.

1. So what can you do?

The most important thing you can do is to become informed by reading your children’s textbooks and other assigned material. If you find material that you consider to be objectionable talk to other like minded parents and then contact your school district. Every district has a curriculum committee. Even if they do not agree with your position they work for you and they must consider your concerns.

Many districts provide an opportunity for parents to participate on textbook review committees. It is much more effective to influence the choice of a textbook prior to the expenditure of hundreds of thousands of dollars rather that after the fact.

2. Review the education laws in your state.

Below is a link that might aid you in your search.
http://www.law.cornell.edu/topics/state_statutes2.html#education

3. Monitor the activities of the State and National Education Associations

Find out what theses folks are thinking and doing. Many professional educators feel that it is their duty to educate children according to the philosophies of the time. In fact the National Education Association (NEA) the largest and most powerful teachers union in the country is committed to the development of curricula that includes favorable references to teenage sexuality, homosexuality, abortion, etc.

As a parent you have the right and the responsibility to influence the educational material that is presented to your child. The cultural pressures within public education are strongly skewed to support liberal ideologies some of which you may object strongly to. In spite of these influences you can be heard and you can cause change. School will be starting soon–your children need you to be engaged.

Abortion on Trial in South Dakota Again

In Abortion on May 2, 2008 at 11:28 pm

You have to hand it to those avid pro-lifers in South Dakota. For the second straight election cycle, they have qualified a ballot initiative in an attempt to limit abortions in the homeland of Mount Rushmore – the Shrine to Democracy.

Nothing is more central to democracy than the right to life.

Initiated Measure 11, if passed by voters November 4th, would ban any abortions not deemed necessary to preserve the lives or health of women and in cases of rape or incest.

A more restrictive ban passed by the Legislature lost at the ballot box in 2006, 56-44 percent. That initiative lacked exceptions.

Credit the group VoteYesForLife.com for leading the effort to protect the unborn children of South Dakota for collecting the necessary signatures for the new ballot measure.

The 2008 initiative looks like a good bet to win. However, South Dakota will no doubt see a celebrity parade of pro-choice sympathizers coming into the state. We suggest that anyone with any doubts about the right to life for all pre-born children and the harms of abortion to utilize the following two resources:

UFI President in Kosovo to Address Constitutional Issues

In Constitution on April 11, 2008 at 7:12 pm

UFI President Carol Soelberg is in Pristina, Kosovo working with pro-family/pro-life coalition allies for the purpose of commenting on the draft of a new constitution’s treatment of social values. Carol filed this report:

I am safely in Kosovo. It was a long, but good trip. I am meeting many wonderful people here and our agenda continues to add new appointments. Our goal is to actually start a few grassroots organizations that will help convey our message when we leave. Our fear is that the newly formed government is moving from “dependence” under the ruling of the United Nations to unelected international bureaucrats, as opposed to their own independent rule.

The man who picked me up from the airport told me a fascinating story. He is an Albanian and has lived here with his family all his life. In 1999, all Albanians were called to the city center for a “rally.” When they arrived, they learned that they were all to be killed on the spot. The commander in charge could not bring himself to do such a dastardly deed, so he put all 8,000 people in trucks and drove them to Albania, where they had to stay for three months until things settled down some. They left without any clothes or supplies, but were grateful to be alive.

Our coalition team of legal and human rights experts is meeting with top government officials and religious leaders about the draft constitution. The team comes from some of the most influential non-governmental organizations (NGOs) in the United States and Europe that focus on social policies related to constitutional and international law, human rights and international institutions. I am representing United Families International here. The team consists of members from: the Alliance Defense Fund, Catholic Family & Human Rights Institute, Concerned Women for America, Chrétiens Démocrates Fédéraux, Action pour la famille-Actie, Educational Initiative for Central and Eastern Europe, Human Life International, Alliance of Romania’s Families and Advocates Europe.

The group is concerned that aspects of the draft constitution removes any ability for Kosova to determine what issues are constitutionally protected. For instance, language in the draft could be misinterpreted to promote certain rights including special rights for “sexual orientation” leading to same-sex “marriage,” a right to abortion. The coaliton is also concerned that the draft could violate the rights of conscience of Kosovar professionals and limit speech, media, assembly and association, preventing any public expression of unpopular viewpoints – the viewpoints that most need constitutional protection.

We are meeting with senior government officials and we also held a press conference today. This weekend, the group will provide a lecture at the University of Pristina and meet with religious leaders.

UFI vs. European Union: The Fight to Keep Abortion Rights Language out of UN Document

In Abortion, European Union on April 11, 2008 at 6:38 pm

Marcia Barlow, UFI’s director of international policy, is at the United Nations attending the annual International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD). She filed this report today:

What seemed like a very tame day Wednesday turned out to be not so great. Late that day, Nan Kennelly, leader of the U.S. delegation here, introduced family-friendly language to the ICPD’s outcome document, in several places. She used language that I drafted — eight words in total. The United States delegation is one of the key allies for UFI and our coalition efforts to defend the traditional family from the ongoing assault by anti-family change agents. The family language is included the document at present, but isn’t popular. Kennelly said that when she introduced the language there was a “huge groan” from the assembly of delegations. The negotiating group permitted the European Union (EU) to pack the document with sexual and reproductive health services language. Thus, the standoff that we face at all of these social conferences at the UN was set.

The EU refuses to accept any descriptive terms that refer to the traditional family in singular terms, preferring instead to promote the more politically correct term “families.” As in the multiple forms of families — broken, headed by homosexual adult(s) and cohabiting households that result in extraordinary costs to government social agencies. UFI believes it is in the best interests of governments to work to strengthen marriages and the family in order to assure healthy communities which require less drain on taxpayer-funded social costs. A group of EU member nations introduced an amendment to the ICPD document which would add three sentences on “reproductive health services” – code language for abortion. Now we’ve got a real problem. Our pro-family coalition was greatly alarmed by this development. It will take hard work to remove the reproductive health services language, and it may result in losing the pro-family language introduced by the U.S. That is precisely what has happened during past ICPD assemblies.

It is pretty much a waiting game now. We have our usual vigil going outside the negotiating room. Utilizing UFI’s “United Nations Negotiating Guide,” we are pulling up all the past conference documents and language precedents that we can to refute the bad language and we are doing everything we can to persuade delegations to remove the EU-preferred terminology.
